Drying with a food dehydrator - Cut or not?
    #23484668 - 07/28/16 06:34 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

I got my first food dehydrator today and I am happy!
I have one question, though. Should I put the mushrooms on the trails as they are, or should I cut them in half or even little pieces?
Does it effect potency in any way?

You can just fill them up whole in the trays.  They'll shrink a good amount.

I dry mine for twelve hours.  They're always done by then for me.

Dont cut em but its preference. When you give a little squeeze and it snaps like crackers then there done times range from climate to machine i would speculate me four hours done.

What about large fruit bodies, though? Should I just cut one tray so that I can just use it as a seperator? Big fruits don't fit in my current setup.

put em in whole. Never a problem. I took one of the trays and cut the mesh out to act as a spacer for the BIG mothers. That way I can put them in whole. Just make sure they're cracker dry when you pull them out.

Lol. Yeah if the fruit is too big to fit, I just put it in anyways  sure it can look like the leaning tower of Pisa, but after a few hours it shrinks enough for the trays to close.

Yeah Mad I have mashed quite a few down even with the spacer. Some of these caps grow as big as a CD.

Just check them every hour or so as you are getting close to dry.  You will know when they are dry when they crumble/snap when you squeeze them.  Don't dry them beyond this, as they will start to cook, change colour and darken.

Dry them an extra 12 hours if you want...  That doesn't actually happen.  It's better for them to be 24 hours overdried than 20 minutes underdried.

Don't cut up your trays. Just mash them in there. Split larger mushrooms in half.

I disagree.  Mangle half your trays for maximum space.  I used a hammer.

Just cut the caps off and split the stems if really thick. Makes them dry faster. Faster drying= more potency.

Make sure to post a pic of the stuffed trays in this thread, I'd love to see that.
