I was working on a bulk pasteurization barrel like grower has but i broke the water heater element in half yersterday in its dry run. My oyster spawn i order came in today . I have a bit straw to do tomorow should i spend all day oven pasteurizating or lime treatment for my test run. I've tired lime treatment before with success and failures.

Get all your pots and pans out, get every hob on your stove going, they should kick out a few kW each. It's a little laborious but it gets the job done.
How did you break your element? Did you put weight on it or something? I assume your dry run wasn't literally a dry run

The element i had was screwed in with a metal screw at the bottom. I didn't wire it correctly im guessing cause i turned it on yes with water in it. Within five mins the element was glowing redish and melted the plastic on the bottow of barrel. The barrel then spilt in the middle ripping the bottom screws apart and rips the element in half. Scary but fun to wacth. Pots and pans it is.

Why do you have to spend all day oven pasturizing? Do you have a barrel you can put hot water into? What vessel would you be using for the lime method?

You could fills those buckets or barrel with hot water and then bring it up to paturization temp with a pot you've boiled, add it.

So the element was screwed into the side of the barrel and submerged and it was glowing red hot? How is that even possible? Was the entireheating part of the element submerged? And you are using a 110v element for a 110v circuit correct?

It was screwed to bottom of the barrel and im not good with electronic stuff i just hooked up the wires to what use to be a 220 oven circuit where the fuse box was. I'll hire a electric expert next time.
