Are you happy? * 8
    #23484199 - 07/27/16 11:29 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

My friend's wife is kind of a bitch. Really controlling, jealous, wants to go to church, wont allow their child at his parents house because they smoke weed, the whole shebang. Shes miserable 24/7. I want to ask her "whats the point of living so righteously if youre so god damn miserable?"

I see this a lot on facebook too. Everybody has such a strong opinion on what's right and what's wrong, how to live, etc..and theyre all fucking miserable. Its like a salesman at your door talking about his amazing shoe cleaning product and his shoes are fucking stained and falling apart.

Are you happy?

I know what you mean, there's a lot of that in the pub as well. Everywhere I guess.

I'm happier than I was yesterday, generally pretty excited about life.

Of course not. Everything is wrong and people just let it happen. The only way to fix it is to come together  and adopt the one for all and all for one mentality.

Wow.

My GF has this annoying trend lately where she is just negative about every little thing. Like every opinion is meant to diss the other person or talk negative about it. I told her to stop it, cause it makes me unhappy and brings down my happiness.

Just realized today it might be tied to her not getting enough sleep.

And it might be tied to her cig smoking. I wish i could wish her cig addiction away :nonono:

For me, Im definitely pretty happy. Got a nice house to live in, a GF who is a joy to be around most the time, nice job that pays way (very important), the future is looking good right now.

Some days kinda suck, other days are neutral, but it aint too bad. Im finally in a good place.

Good question/thread

For me personally, I'm very happy, but I imagine that's not true for a lot of people. I have my dream job, and I have everything I want out of life. There's nothing dragging me down. I'm really lucky that I lead such a nice life currently. I wasn't always this lucky, but man things are great nowadays.

I hear you Walrus. Its a task sometimes for me to pass on the facebook arguments and such that arise on my FB feed, without trolling their squabbles and such, but I do, usually... I feel like people complain about Dems/Republicans, etc... because they WANT something to be upset about, its like a way to vent the frustration that they hide on a daily basis or something. We live in such a great country, there is almost no reason to be sad, ever.

That being said, I feel truly happy. Theres moments of frustration, but I let them out, and continue with my life. Live in a great area, have a great house, family, friends, hobbies, am not bankrupt. Life is fucking good, and I know how to enjoy what Ive been blessed with.

We live in a society that's largely based around desire and it intrinsically leads to the idealistic values that we see placed on their lives and what not. "my life isn't good unless i'm living a certain way because that was what i was taught growing up" plain and simple, and they get strung up on what they think their life should be instead of living it. in short, desire creates suffering.

There's an Ott song that comes to mind, sampling from excerpts from Alan Watts.

Quote:

and because we simply cheated our self the whole way down the line, we saw our life by an allegy as a journey with pilgrimage which had a serious purpose at the end, and the thing was to get to that end, success or whatever it is, or maybe heaven after you're dead.
But, we missed the point the whole way along.
It was a musical thing, and we were supposed to sing, and dance, while the music were being played.

Every 4 years. Its the same rhetoric over and over again.

And this concept is not unique to our culture/society. Its worldwide. It gets to the point where people will kill for it.

Im with nooneman and logical. Im generally happy and easy going. I also steer clear of most nonsense. Maybe theres a correlation.

sure, the concept that "desire leads to suffering" is basically the second truth in Buddhism, which can be applied to anyone's life

I absolutely agree with all of that. Also that's a really great quote.

I think people do tend to cheat themselves by thinking they're going to be rock stars and never seeing the beautiful life in front of them, only seeing the things they don't have.

If we didn't want nice houses and good cars and lots of money we'd be fine without those things.

I'm not even close to happy right now. I never see my kid, I never get to do things, I'm under a good bit of debt, I hate the place I live and a bunch more shit sucks in my life.

But it's all just motivation to do better.

Life really is amazing. And atm I'm happy but I'm not afraid to be sad when I need to

I am glad twighead is happy

I'm not wrong though. 20 -30 years from now you'll have had happy and sad times. So cherish the good while its here and when it gets bad remember how good things can get.

Sure, but I don't think it'll get any worse, I just have learned how to deal with shit.

I've lost more friends in the last two years than people my parents have personally known in the last 15. An absurd amount of overdoses, family members dying, etc. I've faced my own mortality several times already, and that of those I am the closest to. It is all in the outlook my friend  It is only selfish of me to live in pain on the behalf of the loss of a loved one. They wouldn't want that.

I'm sorry about your family/friends but so have I , lots of suicides.Thats neither here nor there ,what is relevant is no matter where are or who you are .You gotta except that there will be happy and sad times in life. If you expect nothing but happy days the rest of your life you're kidding yourself. It is about perspective, failing and being sad isn't a bad thing unless you except it as permanent. You also can't just not deal with the bad parts of life.

Things are sad for me sure, it just doesn't last very long  I generally am able to see the light in anything, whether it's one of my best friends committing suicide or being homeless and starving... I've been through it, and the ultimate reality of the situations does not reflect the pain. Some of my friends find my unrepentant optimism to be one of my worst traits  But it keeps me going, motivated, and driven always.

Marijuana, alcohol, cigarettes. It helps with depression but does nothing for my bouts of anxiety. Which is generally what triggers the sadness. I think I have some undiagnosed subset of manic depression. My moods are unstable. Its crippling sometimes. Infuriating more often than not. I should probably just admit it at this point and start looking into medication. Its already cost me a couple jobs.

funny, i smoked and drank tonight. just woke up 30 minutes to bouts of panic and horrible anxiety. I just ate 600mg L-theanine and drank some water and things are smoothing out real nice. drinking doesn't help anxiety really, neither does weed.

My depression, anxiety, and paranoid/suspicious behavior have cost me jobs as well, especially my last one. I got so stressed out things started unraveling in my mind, weird things started happening at work, and i thought i was being put under surveilance. I'm still not fully convinced I wasn't given the circumstances and the nature of the events. I had what looked and acted to me like PI's that would watch me from this bush line out back, it was sketchy as fuck, but they were real people. They would always drive tinted cars, and if i stared at them they would leave and come back. I really don't want to say how this cost me my last job... but it did, because i let it get to me

It came after i put in an application to a place that got the OK to grow medical weed in FL, even stating to them I'd taken time to learn cannabis horticulture and this and that. It started getting really bad though when I thought certain planes were surveillance craft - i started turning off my phone when the ones that fly super low circling specific areas started showing up. I still do that sometimes though in the mornings... there are aircraft that fly retardedly low over the house, sometimes you can hear the craft just kind of go back and forth over an area, the police helicopters really bug me out with that.

my worry about that is transient tho

So yeah, i know how it feels to have unstable moods and irritability as a result from depression and other things.

Yeah you're right, the weeds aggravating it more then anything. I should stop, I rationalize it because it kills time. The worst part is even though its transient you're still judged harshly for it. People have zero compassion when it comes to anxiety/paranoia or depression. Like none.

Instead of looking into medication, why don't you first try toning down what you already intake, rather than taking pills to make your current intake of substances more doable?

Ya, there's a reason people drink, smoke and get stoned.

Did it myself long enough and still do sometimes.

However, there's also a reason people give up. Alcohol is known to cause depression, and worsen symptoms of depression that are already bubbling below the surface.

Being addicted to smoking has your mind in a constant state of craving, fixing, relaxation and withdrawal umpteen times a day, assuming you smoke regularly.

Weed has its ups for sure but it also has its downs and it's not for everyone. It's easy to just get comfy in whatever situation you find yourself in once you're stoned.

I've been where you are but a fresh/clear head that isn't stuck on a hijacked reward loop is a key to going forward.

The mind simply operates on a different level.

Hope that didn't sound high-nosed because it's not meant to be.

Alcohol especially causes a lot more problems than liver damage and car crashes.

Tobacco also increases risks of depression.

Naw its not high nosed. Solid advice is what it is. I've actually been planning on going full shaolin monk mode for the last few days. I think Ill put it into action today. I've just been dreading the nicotine withdrawals. Throw a bunch of fruit and leafy greens into my diet, switch to pure water. Meditate, run. It never fails

I'm not happy. Wtf is happy anyway? lol
I try to be content, enjoy nature and the things that interest me.
I can't buy into the bullshit in life that most people seem to be happy enough with, and I am cursed with trying to see things how they really are. More of a curse to people around me than myself though really as I want to see things for what they are.

Sure I have moments of happiness here and there. I prefer to stay off of the rollercoaster though and stay on a level (contentment).

there are things that result in states of happiness currently in my life, but overall, no, i am not happy.  i'm hoping my situation changes next march/april and the domino effect that has been the last couple of years knocks over the last tile, allowing me a semi-fresh start.

I don't have a lot of material things, but I do have family, faith, and love in my heart, a love supreme which I find hard to contain sometimes, I just want to share it with everyone.

My only goal in this life is to project this love, if I can help just one person through a dark time, then I will be satisfied with my life on this planet.

I am happy.

Reasonably... Eh. I have a lot of challenges on my plate but I'm getting by and making progress at the things that matter to me.

I've pretty much opted out of serious political conversation at this point. 2016 has been a sustained nightmare since the first month and I reckon a lot of that has to do with the election. Every four years, everybody in the country becomes a bunch of punctilious little turds. I hate it and I can't wait until it's over. I don't even care who wins anymore. Seriously. Just make the bullshit stop.

I'm generally really happy. I get in funky moods here and there, and especially through the holiday season (without fail every year).
Even when I am in the funkness, I know how great life is and how lucky I am.

Bodhi, I'm glad to see you're being real with yourself; you know what you need to do. you got this

The only things I still majorly struggle with in the way of my happiness are guilt issues.
I carry a lot of weight around with me daily holding onto shit I could've done in the past.
A lot of it has to do with my dad's death. I wish I would've helped him more instead of shutting him out. Other things too.
I carry the guilt around with me and it makes it hard to love myself, which tries to pull me towards depression.  Ultimately I'm good at distracting myself before it actually gets there, but I see the path it lends itself to.

I can't remember the last time I was happy for any extended period of time, even a day, nothing more then fleeting moments of it depending on the situation but then it's right back to the same depression I've always had.

I've kinda been in a nihilistic mood since reading more about the Clathrate Gun Hypothesis and the fact that there is evidence that the gun has 'fired', so to speak, and climate change in general, and seeing first hand the difference in the oceans in the last 15 years myself.

I guess I'm okay otherwise. I get really depressed about what's going on in the world and it puts all my emotional baggage into perspective and I see how little it all really matters...which is good. On the otherhand it also distracts me from truly being happy. Whatever, I'll figure it out, doesn't matter anyways.

Also the past week of my life and the next week are kind of a waiting game because I'm waiting to hear back from a series of pretty important interviews and they told me they're making decisions by the end of this week and I probably didn't get it. So that's certainly not helping.

I don't run from my guilt, I try and work through it, just haven't been able to totally get past it.

what I distract myself from is sitting in it, dwelling and getting really bummed out.
I work out a lot of my issues by going out and climbing by myself. There's something super zen about it.

of course it does.

you know it does, snap out of it peebs.

this life is short.  too short to choose to be unhappy.

yeah, I agree on all accounts.

I mean, it doesn't matter if I'm happy on the grand scheme of things; like, the world will still turn, the plants will still grow, the tides will still rise n fall even if I'm miserable.

but when you realize happiness is a choice and perspective, it's ridiculous to punish yourself ya know?

I am currently happy. I don't bother living a righteous life. I have my own morals values but I follow none of them. I don't impose anything on anyone and I don't allow people to do it to me.

So yeah. I have no restraints. Therefore my brain has no reason to be unhappy.

People seek happiness as if it's something you have to add to your life. A mission. An objective.

You don't need to add. You need to substract what makes you unhappy. Then once you're happy, it's much easier to add whatever you want..

IMO of course...

I emboldened the parts I like. I am pretty happy right now, the most I have been in a LONG time. Have a mate/friend/lover that I NEVER thought I would have, no CC debt, halfway through my RN refresher course (guess I could be studying on it right now though, lol) and I'm passing in the 80+ GPA range, car is paid off and running good, bills and rent are paid and not worried about next months, killer credit score (817) and probably buying a house soon with my mate (next year for sure), and everything seems really good for now. Life is peaks and valleys, I happen to be going up to a peak for now, been in a valley the last few years.

I totally know that feeling. That's the way my life feels right now. Sometimes you're in a valley for so long that you almost forget that the peaks exist, but then things start rising toward a peak again and life is good.

When we get what we want we are "happy"

When we don't, we are dis-satisfied

One approach is to abandon this roller coaster ride and
find peace that's not dependent on what happens in life.

Thats really boring and adds nothing to society. Who gives a shit if your happy just sitting their doing nothing. Make something of yourself and dont become some punk who shuts it out with meditation because life isnt all gravy.

When we get what we want we are "happy"

When we don't, we are dis-satisfied

It's how we often turn life into an emotional roller-coaster.

When we depend on certain life situations or accomplishments to be happy, we enter the gates of Hell.

It's irrational to depend on what happens in life to be happy, right?

Otherwise, we chase happiness. Catch it. Then lose it.

We chase happiness. Catch it. Then lose it.

(repeat, for a lifetime of grief)

It's a foolish futile endeavor that fuels anger, depression, and anxiety.
