Possible Actives???

I went on a 6h hunt today searching for gyms. Its the third time i search for them for hours and hours and i found soooo many different mushrooms but no gyms. I thought those are gyms luteos But they dont have a veil and no bruising (in first minute maybe they need more time to bruise because i didnt pick any)
The first 2 photos are from the same tree and the other 2 fotos from a different one. The cap is dry to the touch not slimy or moistened the stem is thick and they have orangish gills. Ive been searching for gyms for so long but without success. I found tons of king boletes(and other boletes too), reishi, chanterelles, pluteus sp, and a lot more. Do gyms grow in same habitat and season than those msuhrooms? Help/info would be apriciated Thanks.

agree. their scent made me think they'd taste so good...if they weren't poisonous.

After looking a bit at some omphalotus pics i think they are some omphalotus species and not gymnopilus. Also i found a giant patch of jack o lantern not far from it. Im finding all kinds of mushrooms except the said "common" gymnopilus.

Look for places with woodchips and the areas directly adjacent to those woodchips. I've found gyms "in nature" and on logs just a couple of times and they have all been inactives, but the majority of my finds (and all the active gyms I've found) were on/near newly cut woodchips paths or landscaping. If you're looking in the woods they'll probably probably remain uncommon for you.

this is pretty much my same experience on the west coast. i have found active gyms in the wild once, but ive seen them in chip beds a number of times.

not sure where you are, but active gyms i've found in the northeast have been on subsurface rotting stumps. And in the fall.

Keep your eye out on your daily commutes. I have found 2 large patches of Gyms on the sides of roads in grassy areas growing from buried wood. The patches found in forests seem to prefer logs and bases of stumps. Still nothing here in MD yet and I have been checking almost daily.

Yh i think the reasons why im not finding gyms are: 1. Im searching in woods and they are rarer there. 2. Its too early, not the season 3. The only wood chips i found are in forests I know exactly where to find gyms i literally looked at every information about them on the internet and seen all vids about them (where they found to see the environment) The problem is i know just 1 place where there is wood chips other than in the woods so i dont have many chances of finding any. I am going on hunts every 2 days for 7h each time so if there were gyms i think i would find them. But finding tons of chanterelles and king boletes make up for not finding any active

Don't get discouraged. In my area Gymnopilus sp. are rather scarce. I have only found them once or twice in maybe 3 or 4 years of hunting.
