Casing alternatives

Finally figured out how to post my questions. Okay here we go. I have quit a few jars that are ready to be cased then fruited. I have tamps and argentinas on WBS. They have done very well and colonized in less than 2 weeks. My question is I have been searching for coir in my area and cant find anything. Are there other methods as a substrate. I mainly was wondering if gardening soil would be suitable or if it would be a fail. I ordered coir from outgrow, but ill have to wait till next week for it to get here. By that time my other jars will be ready. Sorry if I bumped anyones old threads lately. Im a dumb grunt who isnt very tech savvy, just figured out how to post my own thread.
Thanks very much.

you keep mixing up the terms "casing" and "substrate". pet stores has coir. cow/horse fields have manure. (substrates). dont case your grains, spawn them to sub instead.
"gardening soil" is not a universal mix so hard for us to tell you whats in your soil

Thanks for the help guys. I ended up ordering from out_grow. Just had to wait a few days. I also picked up some peat and verm. Space, I was getting very confused. I thought I knew and understood what I.was Was reading. Turns out I wasnt, so I had to go through and re-read a lot of materials. Now im tracking it all. I.was under the impression that a substrate is what you cased with and casing was just a tek. Ohh how I was very confused. Now im doing good I have a tek going I havent seen on here. For shits and giggles I spawned to whole sunflower kernels, havent seen too much about this. When I mentioned it before a guy said it was doomed to fail, but my tamps colonization is amazing. If it works ill post it to you all.

you dont spawn to seeds/grains, that's called g2g and must be done in a SAB and kept sterile until full colonization. you spawn to a bulk substrate (coir, verm, straw, manure) and then you can add a casing layer on top (also coir, verm, and peat, jiffy, potting soil etc)
what TEKare you following?

Im following a tek I saw in a video. Well I inoculated on straight grain, and have fully colonized grain. And your right I didnt spawn I inoculated. Sorry for hirrible terminology The grain is then put into a tub or aluminum tray, with casing. In my case I but a layer of coir and verm down, then two pints of spawn with another layer. I did exactly as one of the how to videos on youtube.

yeah you should mix grains + coir evenly, called spawning to bulk, way more efficient than casing grains.

instead of layering you mix grains and substrate evenly. just as easy as it sounds. most videos on youtube are pretty bad, you should read teks on the shroomery instead, find frankhorrigans stuff and spitballjedis the basics, shows you a lot of how its done.

If you are going to use peat moss in your casing layer it is very important to also have some hydrated lime in also...,if you can't get the lime, I suggest casing with just coir/verm and if you are not growing per is envy, do not case at all

I definitely don't have anything against....I've cased every tub I've made for the last year....maybe that was the wrong emoji to use...was going more for a fist in mouth

Interesting. Ive read the mono tub tek, and I am kinda following that method. I know it's not recommended to stray from proven teks. But in his tek he.doesnt say what his subtrate was and took spawn straight to the coir.

Whoa wait gd-it. Substrate... I thought your substrate is what your myc grows on... Wbs, rye berry, manure, straw, what ever. Or am I lost on an island and in need of saving. Before (as I said) I was mixing it up thinking a substrate is the material used for casing, and I thought casing to only be a tek. Since then I have re-read a lot, mainly meanings and deffs with some teks. Now you say to mix my spawn, with sub. This is what confuses me... Are you talking a g2g transfer? Or something else. Like mixing my grain with manure, then letting manure become colonized and then case it? Is that how it works or am I just freaking fretarted.
