Norway police involved in rare shooting
    #23481064 - 07/27/16 02:14 AM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Hordaland police fired two shots at a man who had barricaded himself inside his apartment, Bergens Tidende reported.

Norway arms police in wake of Brussels attacks (22 Mar 16)
Police officers unsuccessfully attempted to negotiate with the man, who was threatening to take his own life.

“After a while the dialogue broke down. Police then shot a tear gas grenade in through the window and then moved into the apartment,” Kjersti Eidsnes of the Hordaland Police District told Bergens Tidende.

When officers entered the residence, the man shot at them and police returned fire.

Officers shot the man twice, hitting him once in the hand and once in the arm.

Police said the 20-something man was intoxicated and mentally unstable. He was previously known to the police.

The two shots fired at the man equalled the number of shots fired by police in all of 2014. Neither of those shots killed or injured anyone and according to a comprehensive report on the use of police firearms released last year, Norwegian police have only shot and killed two people since 2002.

Eidsnes said that although she did not have “concrete figures”, it has been “many years” since police in Hordaland had discharged their weapons in the line of duty.

The man shot by police on Monday was taken to hospital and his injuries were not life-threatening. He is being charged with threatening the police, but according to Bergens Tidende it wasn’t immediately certain whether the gun he used to fire at officers contained live cartridges.

The police have notified the Norwegian Bureau for the Investigation of Police Affairs about the rare shooting incident.

Don't panic just yet. He was shot in the hand and arm and his injuries aren't life threatening.

The cops must've been some sharp shooters, not having had to discharge their weapons in the line of duty since years before that.

It's almost like they had some kind of training off duty, where they practiced on targets and not people.

It's the darndest thing.

What would you suggest they do?

Americans are 10 times more likely to be killed by guns than people in other developed countries, a new study finds.

Compared to 22 other high-income nations, the United States' gun-related murder rate is 25 times higher. And, even though the United States' suicide rate is similar to other countries, the nation's gun-related suicide rate is eight times higher than other high-income countries, researchers said.

Ye watch too many westerns. Albania have more deaths though so there's that.

It's all about machetes.

All them people killing themselves doing society a favour you might say.

And at least it wouldn't have any impact on the people in their cicles.

Suicide has been known to have a calming effect on those around them.

It doesn't at all ruin lives and spread like a rash, like terrorism.
