Pokemon Gaming Thread. (All games and consoles) * 1
    #23480873 - 07/27/16 12:11 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Since Pokemon Go's debute i recently had to dig out my really old gameboy advanced and my pokemon red version one of the two original pokemon games.

I have been on a nostalgia trip all weekend since i grabbed it from my sosters house where i left it when i moved. When i was a youngster i would catch alot of pokemon but just train 1 or 2 strong ones, needless to say i had no strategy other than run and gun.

I now have only 3 badges in the game but have been leveling all my pokemon up so i have six strong pokemon and more strong ones in storage.

Has the release of pokemon Go made you guys dust off the old gameboys? What versions do you have? Anybody still play that nintendo 64 pokemon game you could connect your gameboy game to?

Pokemons was my shit growing up

I still play the first two series from time to time. Red/Blue and Gold/Silver. These days i tend to opt for the enhanced remakes though. Not only are they prettier, but they offer more accurate battle mechanics in reference to Pokemon types.
Great games. I've said for a long time that Pokemon is one of the best strategy games ever made.

I used to have competitions with my cousin when i was about fourteen and she was thirteen. I used to create a well balanced team that i would equally train, and she tended to like you used to, just train her starter. At certain points of the game we were to link the gameboys up and battle it out. I felt confident that i could take out her Pokemon with intelligent type battling, but no matter how hard i tried, her Charizard that was somewhat 20 levels above my highest level Pokemon, would wipe out my entire team.

Yeah that seems to be the case with focusing all your time into one pokemon. In red version right now i have all my pokemon lvl 26 or higher my highest being dugtrio 35 but i caught him at 31 and every pokemon in the game is instantly fainted by his dig move.

I plan on starting to collect all the pokemon games up to the new ds games idk if i will get those.

Pokemon is such a nostalgia trip its the perfect way to pass time.

Over the weekend i played 16+hours and that all flew by.

Magenta did you ever play the nintendo 64 pokemon game?

That was my shits too man!

I GREW UP on RPGs (Zelda series, Dragon Warrior series, Final Fantasy series.. Chrono Triggers etc etc etc) but for some reason I NEVER played a pokemon game until Pokemon Go.

It was just a little after my time... I think the original one came out in 1996? And by that time I was 16 or 17 or so and was way more into other games (Ultima Online) and didn't really see the appeal. I always thought "that's for little kids".

But now that I've seen gameplay videos and gotten semi-hooked on pokemon go.. I'm interested in trying out Pokemon red enhanced or one of those.

Nah i had a PS1 back in the day, and missed out on owning a N64. Most of my friends had N64s and i became excluded from their conversations because of my choice of console, but i don't regret it. The PS1 had some mad games for it too, and i soon found more friends that like me had a PS1.
That sounds more dramatic than what it really was. No friendships were severed because of what console you had, lol. It wasn't a big deal. I bring it up though because i was a fan of Pokemon and i was always curious about what the N64 had to offer since it had Pokemon games that my friends loved.
I remember one time i was in Target and there was a N64 console set up for kids to try out and it had Pokemon Stadium in it. I played that thing for hours while my mum did shopping. I must have been the kid everyone hated because there was a literal line behind me. Kids would line up to fight me and i'd kick there ass and someone new would step up to challenge me.
I did this on more than one occasion. One time Super Smash Bros was in there, but i wasn't nearly as good at that game. A different kid stood there for hours that day, smashing everyone else with god damn Mario.
I emulate a lot of consoles these days but the N64 is still a hard console to emulate considering its age. This has left me still unable to play some games like Pokemon Stadium properly. I'm confident i could kick that kid's ass on Super Smash Bros these days however.

Hey Shroomism, the Pokemon game mechanics are significantly different to Pokemon Go. There's no CP, Stardust or Pokemon candies. The character doesn't have levels, but the Pokemon do, and their power is dependent on what level they are. There's a much larger focus on types, move sets and making a well prepared and balanced team. I personally prefer the game mechanics of the games to GO, but i guess they had to change things for GO since there's no battles other than gym battles, so therefor no way to level up Pokemon.
If you do go through and get Fire red of Leaf green; a lot of people didn't realise it, but depending on what Pokemon you choose at the beginning determines how easy you're going to find the game. Bulbasaur = easy, Squirtle = medium, Charmader = hard.
It's the same game, but the type advantage for the beginning of the game where there's few types about can really make a difference.

Yeah totally understood... my friend explained it to me. Seems I would like the RPG mechanics of the earlier Pokemon games much more than Pokemon Go.
I used to be a really hardcore RPG player.. I like challenges and theorycrafting to min/max everything. Pokemon Go is pretty "meh" to me.
Although it's kinda fun "gotta catch em all" and trying to figure out the IV stats... but I hear the IV stats in the earlier games have MUCH MUCH more impact..
and like you said much larger focus on moves, making a balanced team etc... that's the kind of shit I love.

And when I first got Pokemon Go the day it came out.. just because I came into work and all my coworkers were blabbing about it. I hadn't read anything about it.
I loaded up and my guy was just standing there.. and I was hitting my finger everywhere and all he would do is spin around...
And I'm like.. how the fuck do you walk around in this stupid game? And my coworker was like you have to actually walk...
I was like !!!!! What the fuck!! I just want to sit here and play a game goddamnit. What's this fucking bullshit about having to walk around to play a game?? lol. He's all.. Pokemon Red it up yo.

But yeah.. I'm not really a huge GO fan... I just play it.. just.. because. I'm not all that into it to be honest. I'm only level 15 and my best pokemon is a CP like 1200 Arcanine with bad IV stats
And I'm kind of lazy.. I have like 30 pokestops and 5 gyms within viewing distance from my house but I got to walk a block and half to get to them lol
But I can see I would probably love the OG pokemon games, cause I fukin love me some turn-based RPGs that really make you think about your plays and playstyle.
It's actually probably one of the few RPG games I haven't played actually.. cause I was a fucking junky back in the day. But ROMing it up now.

This sentiment is on the money.
Red/Blue/Gold/Silver were great for their time, but slightly more focused on the exploration and collecting aspect.
Had a copy of Red and Blue each, with two gameboys and 151 in my Pokédex on my main cartridge (Red).
Battle in Red and Blue often felt kind of jokey though -- a Mewtwo could wipe a whole enemy team because the only real hard-counter to him was Parasect, who was a joke in pretty much every other regard.

When the series got to Ruby/Sapphire (and Fire Red/Leaf Green as remakes shortly after) they dramatically improved focus on combat.
Lots more counter-play, having to make intelligent swaps, being able to have a 6 Pokémon roster as a diverse team, laughing maniacally with a min/maxed Chansey HP tank.

No experience with Pokémon go, but IVs are just one wing of things for builds.  They are impacting, but kind of hidden and less controllable.
EV training is the more brutal part of it to deal with -- each individual Pokémon in game has specific values for stats it increases when beaten.  Beat down enough Golbats and nothing else, and your Pokémon may end up with +10 to Speed on its next level up.  Things like that.
Really controlled raising for competitive battles meant running from fights I did not want the EVs from to track down the ones I did -- it was important to know which grind locations were best weighted for leveling each stat.
IVs can differ from Pokémon to Pokémon of the same type, two Abras may have totally different IV stats, but there is no real control over them as opposed to the EVs.

Lots of depth to min/maxing and skill builds; they had some great mechanics in place with breeding and stuff as well.  Cross breed obscure mixes to pass down skills to Pokémon types that would never be able to learn them otherwise.
Personalities/Nature giving extra flexibility was nice as well.  Being able to turn a Pokémon of the same type into a tank rather than a DD just by virtue of their Nature was able to cause nasty surprises when fighting wi-fi battles.

As someone who struggles with OCD, some of the micromanaging drove me nuts, but for depth of play third generation onward did some compelling things.
