Colonizing Jars slowed- I think it's my fault
    #23479340 - 07/26/16 05:00 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Hello Shroomerites,
First I appreciate the great resources this site provides. I've used the search function for most of my education and journey into this hobby, but my situation has enough unique factors I decided I should ask. This is my first attempt, I've had good results thus far.

On June 28th I inoculated 9 jars (I follow MudaFuka's Tek) with Golden Teacher and I began to see mycellium growth about 7 days after.  It's almost been a month, and the jars kept going till about 50%, some give or take up to 75%.  Then lately things have seemed to stall for the past week and a half.

I've shaken them once, when they were about 30%.

But I'm afraid I've handled them too much and they won't grow anymore.  I didn't know better that I should not move them or jar them, although I was careful anyhow.

The bottoms of the jars in some of them aren't colonized, so I tried to gently break up the rye grain (rye grain, coco, etc) because it seemed like I had packed it down too much when I first PC'ed the jars.

Now after using the search function I realized that the probable cause of my jars slowing down was my own handling of them.

My question is, now that I won't touch them for at least a week, will they begin growing again or is it possible that the mycelium is dead or won't grow any further? Let me know if you'd like pics.
Thanks,
Jimmy

What kind of inoculation method? Spore solution? If so they could've gone bacterial. If you're going to play grains just do agar. It's as easy as making jello and requires ten or 15 bucks in materials.

I bought a syringe from one of the trusted vendors, aren't those syringes LC?

If they go bacterial, do they change color? I still see some new growth, where the white myeclia is thin and spreading but of course I can't tell day to day.

Don't I need actual mushrooms to make culture on agar though? rather than buying spores and putting them on again somehow?

Thanks.

If they stalled, it is most likely bacteria. If you don't know what your looking for, it can be hard to tell. Sometimes hard to tell if you do know what your lookin for. You put your spores from the syringe on agar and transfer till it's clean.

How does handling jars slow growth as long as your not shaking or being rough with them?

I don't know, this is my first time and I thought possibly I needed to be extremely delicate with them to let the shaken mycelium recover, and that I hadn't been careful enough because I examine them every couple of days which requires moving them.

I'm new too. I was worried I was hurting my jars with my love. I look at them in the morning and at night because I'm excited and obsessed.:crazy2:

I would expect it's OK to look at them as long as no grains are moving around. I think the teks that use the dry verm layer on top to keep out contams are the ones you should not disturb. But I'm not sure, best wait for a user with a Trusted Cultivator tag to chime in.
