How can I improve my mini monotub? Trouble w/ FAE

I just finished my first ever harvest! It was a modest success at about 10 dry grams. My SO and I each had about 2 grams last night and had a great time, so I'm pretty happy with how things turned out for my first grow. I do know that I could have had a bigger yield however, so I'd like to know what I can improve for my next batch of spawn that's currently colonizing.

Here are my tubs that I'll be using for my next couple of runs. (The photo with sub is the it grow that started out in a bag; due to a great deal of side pinning, I ended up moving it to give the fruits more room to develop.) My main issues I've been running into were lighting and FAE. To solve the former, I purchased some taplights from Home Depot and attached them to the inside of the lid. Unfortunately, the batteries drained almost immediately from 12/12 cycling, so that was disappointing. Instead, I'm going to cut the middle of the lid out and cover with clear plastic to allow more light in.
As far as FAE issues go, I was having trouble with fuzzy feet, so I reduced the amount of polyfill and I plan to cut four additional 1" holes in the lid and and one more hole on each long side. I was wondering if I should maybe ditch the polyfill and move on to Tyvek, as it is much easier to work with.
Does anyone have any other suggestions on areas where I could improve?

Are you turning this into a sgfc or something? Why the extra FAE holes in the lid for a mono? Were you over misting the sub? That can cause fuzzy feet too. Also light from the side of the tub is just fine, no need to cut a big hole in the top and cover it with plastic.

Taping the outside of the tub does not really help prevent side pinning. Your sub should be touching your liner on the inside of the tub so as the sub shrinks the liner states with it. Eliminating a microclimate using the liner diminishes side and bottom pinning.

Cosmo: Ah, I had assumed the fuzzy feet were from a lack of GE. I don't think I was over misting, but this was my very first run, so that's a possibility. I only misted if the sub lost its glisten, followed by a quick fan with the lid. That's good to hear about the light being acceptable, I wasn't really looking forward to cutting into that lid. Would you still recommend I don't add the bottom holes as well?
MountainManDan: I definitely misunderstood the purpose of the liner! I made the assumption that because light causes pinning that side pinning could be avoided by reducing available light. What sort of liner should I be using to prevent this?

A trash bag laid on the inside of the tub. It sticks to the sides of the sub as it shrinks, making it much harder for side pins to form.

looks more like contam/trich-pins to me than not enough fae problems.

Ha, yeah, it's a wreck. I didn't want to damage the surface of the sub too badly by breaking it up after transferring from the bag into the tub, especially when I had shrooms wanting to grow. Today I went ahead and cleared the sub of fruits and primordia so that I could break it up, dunk it, and hopefully have it reknit and pin again. I suppose if there are contams waiting around to capitalize on the grow, now is probably the time they'll rear their ugly heads.
Bless their little hearts, shrooms will grow just about anywhere they can, but getting them to thrive is definitely gonna take some practice!

why do you keep breaking up a fruiting sub?!? or remove pins??
you should find a TEK you can do, and follow it. this is all over the place.

The first time I broke it up was taking it out of the bag it was growing in. There were mushrooms growing and ready to harvest (veils broken) in areas I couldn't reach, so it stood to reason that I should remove those before either a sporeplosion happened or they started to rot and ruined the whole operation.
The second time I broke it up and removed the pins is because half of them had aborted and the chunky surface that resulted after transferring from the bag to the tub and NOT crumbling was interfering with growth. More or less, I was trying to resolve issues that I had created by starting with a grow kit instead of a bulk sub.

that sounds like a lot of poor excuses to me, your sub is dirty and breaking it up wont help, mushrooms find their way when they grow, believe me. follow a tek if you want success, follow it blindly and dont think too much on your own (yet) on how to deviate, nothing personal just how it should be done!

Not to sound arrogant, spacechildo, but I would not label this an unsuccessful grow. I've already harvested once, and while it wasn't top-notch, I'm fairly happy with it given the circumstances. Even if it doesn't fruit again, or if it contams, I enjoyed it and I have fruits to show for it. As this was my very first attempt, I'm not disappointed with it if all I gained out of it was a few trips worth of mushrooms and a buttload of information. Was it perfect? Not even sort of. Did I mess up? Absolutely, all over the place. Do I know better how to grow for my next run? You bet your ass.

I'm just worried next grow you'll find some other way to deviate from the TEK and basically screw yourself over

That's a fair concern. I promise my next grow will be by the book. I set myself up for a lot of problems this time by starting with a grow kit, which was giving me lackluster results. It was less intimidating for a beginner, but I can see now why it isn't even kind of optimal, OR cost effective. Next month I'll have a good and proper monotub grow from start to finish.
