Spawn-sub ratio question
    #23478178 - 07/26/16 09:36 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

I know this is somewhere on the search forums, I started a search and after a few posts I couldn't find my answer. I know I should know this by now but I am really sick at the moment and don't have a lot of patience.

Could you please tell me what my spawn/sub ratio if I do the following:

3 quarts of spawn with 650 grams coir, 5 quarts of water, 3 quarts of verm, 1 cup of powered gypsum

I have 9 quart jars of Mazatapec that are almost 100% after a shake at 20-30% colonized and they are looking great. My first tub I used 3.5 quarts of spawn to this ratio and harvested around a pound of dried cubensis. I did my second tub at 5 quarts with the same sub ratio and got less mushrooms.

Of course this is multispore and genetics play a part in harvest quantities but the 3.5 worked very well so I assume 3 will work well too. I have also read other users using 3 quarts to great success. I plan to use 3 quarts per tub so I can have my grow room filled to the 3 tub capacity it is built for.

Thank you for all feedback and responses :super:

Coir can vary a bit when hydrated.  I recommend you just make the substrate in a bucket or something and then count the number of quart jars it fills up.  That's what I do.

Just a ball park guess, each brick of coir is around 8 give or take, + 3 verm = 11  so around 1:3.5-4.

Ok thank you everyone for the replys, I will go with 1:3.5 ratio as the best estimate. That isn't to bad, I have seen people do 1:4 with good success with multispore, but wish it was closer to 1:2.

I have read the success is all dependent on the genetics (how aggressive the mycelium is) and how clean the spawn is. This Mazatapec has been growing a lot like the Amazonian strain from the same vendor, very aggressive and quick. I suppose I could just do 2 tubs, and put 4.5 quarts of spawn in each

I'll dwell on it further
