Panaeolus Cyanescens Grow Log

These WBS jars were inoculated with an agar wedge a few weeks ago.

They were then spawned to cvg in an aluminum tray 6 days ago and the surface looks to be very healthy and fully colonized.

I will be applying a light "jiffy" mix casing to the surface and fruiting immediately in my hybrid SGFC/monotub.

Looks like I finally have a legitimate chance of successfully growing these if all goes well

Thanks, I'm amazed at how fast my trays colonized! I'm pasteurizing some jiffy mix/verm right now and I'll be applying a 1/4" layer tomorrow morning

Can't wait to see the results, I'm thoroughly intrigued by your Sgfc/mono hybrid. Just spawned to cvg? I was under the impression pans required some kind of poo in their sub? Looks great, keep us updated. If this goes well for you I just might have to try my hand at some pans.

Update (7 days into colonization):
Tray 1:
There is some pooling on the surface. It was very lightly patted with a paper towel, being very careful not to make contact with the surface, but to just absorb the moisture.

I then cased it with a thin layer of "jiffy" mix/verm (3:1)

Tray 2:

I applied a thin top layer of cvg over the top at the time of spawning. It almost fully colonized, with a few spots of cvg casing leftover. This mycelium is super aggressive, I never expected it to run through this cvg sub soo fast.
Cased with a thin layer of "jiffy mix".

Monotub/SGFC hybrid FC
The design allows some FAE to pass just at the level of the pans. And the damp perlite will keep the humidity at a high level. The tub is resting on 5 wide mouth quart jars to allow FAE to enter the bottom holes. There is a window fan on low at the far end of my room to circulate the air (and also because it's like 85f where I am )
Medium tightness polyfill in the bottom holes. Very loose poly in the top holes. I'm going to wait another day or two before misting, because the casing itself is still kind of damp and I want it to dry out a bit first.

Thanks! Here's another mini tray that I spawned four days ago, and it's already fully colonized! It's got a lot of pooling on the surface, but looks healthy and no weird smells or anything. I'm gonna let it colonize an extra three days, then fruit it in a dubtub.

I've been posting on a pretty inconsistent basis, been soo caught up with other things this summer. But, after seeing how well my pan trays were doing, I just had to write up a growlog. I have high hopes this time around. I've failed two times already with pans, but the third time is always a charm!

Thanks man, I'm super excited. I figured I wanted to consolidate it for a bit just in case the middle of the sub wasn't fully colonized. I also read that pans take an average of 7 days to fully colonize, so I didn't want to rush anything. Hopefully my patience pays off, can't wait to see those tiny mushrooms start popping up

pans at 1:2 ratio does a sub in 4-5 days easily for me when the temps are good(75f+) they love to eat coir casings tho, thought maybe you consolidated to make it change pace from colonizing to fruiting..

Yeah that's true, but an extra few days doesn't hurt I'm still trying to figure out how often to mist the surface. Sometimes it's hard to tell how hydrated the casing is just off looks. I've read that pans abort easily if over-misted so I may just spray it once or twice to be on the safe side.

coir changed color when dry, but I try to keep the casing layer pretty moist until I see pinheads, they grow so fast you dont really need to mist the casing anymore until harvest.
Looks great so far, hope its a good one!

Okay that's good to know, thanks. I'll try casing my mini tray with some leftover coir. The best part about all this is that I didn't have to use poo at all.
And if the coir casing works as well as the jiffy mix casing, growing pans will be a breeze from now on. Just gotta do the bucket tek once and I'm good to spawn like 3 or 4 trays!

2 Days after casing
Surface looks healthy, but maybe a tad dry so I proceeded to mist it until there were tiny beads of moisture on the surface.
*I'll take more detailed pics later, I was in a rush

I will stop misting when I see the first pinhead pop up. But, it should be at least 4 days or so until then, just gotta be patient

Yeah, from what I've read, it causes them to abort early. I misted a few times today already, and the casing is getting really colonized. Not sure if that's a good or a bad thing. Maybe I used too much verm?

Yeah honestly pans like things dry. Even when misting the casing, don't get it glistening like cubes.
Once pins appear DEFINITELY cut out misting.
I've seen it get colonized a lot before pinning. I wouldn't worry too much yet.

Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely keep that in mind. But, with the high level of FAE I have in my room, I can afford to mist a bit more consistently, as the surface evaporates the moisture quickly.

Casing 90+% colonized -- Day 3 post-casing
Tray 1:

Tray 2:

I made sure to mist very carefully. As you can see, there are tiny beads of moisture on the surface. I will withhold misting until it evaporates off completely and mist again to further stimulate pin formation, then cease misting altogether when the first pinhead shows up.

Thanks man, make sure you get as clean of an agar wedge as possible. And unless you're very confident in your sterile techniques, I suggest sticking to agar to grain, rather than grain to grain transfers. It is a large vector for contams in my experience and takes extra careful technique. It's better to keep a couple of clean agar plates on hand and just keep dropping them in

Day 4:

Strong cottony mycelial growth on surface. It looks very white and healthy. No weird smells.
I'm starting to think maybe I used too much verm in my jiffy mix and therefore made it too nutritious. And that's why the mycelium is just running through it. Not sure how much purpose it serves now as a "casing layer". But, I'll just have to wait and see.
And the water droplets are slowly evaporating off, it may take an extra day or two before the surface is completely dry.

Well since I apparently have overlay, I will case one tray with another layer of jiffy mix and leave the other one alone as an experiment. I still have some fully colonized WBS jars left that I'm waiting to spawn. With my next trays, I will consolidate them for at least 5 days after full colonization of the surface, as recommended by a fellow shroomerite.

lets talk about overlay.....
I thought overlay was kind of like a myth....didn't RR say once that overlay almost never happens and that people should stop freaking out about it?
wasn't it typical back in the 2000's for people to scrape trays with knives and stuff to try and save it from overlay? now thats been proven to be bunk.

Overlay is pretty damn rare with cubes, almost impossible to have. With a species like pans it's so common it blows. Different species.

So my trays are pretty much a bust right? I mean the sub is shrinking away from the edge of the tray, so I know the mycelium is getting weaker and so far no pins. Seems like my only option is to double case and hope for the best
