my sterile water jar is full of rice flour, how does rice flour keep getting in the PC water
    #23474220 - 07/25/16 01:00 AM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Basically ive been noticing that every time i pressure cook jars theres white residue on the outside, which is rice flour. This time, a small jar i used to refill my invincible windex doped golden teacher syringe, 50ml or so i think, even though it was totally wrapped up in foil and had a micropore tape filter on the lid, 3 layers for the pressure and to stick the needle through, somehow rice flour got right inside that jar, though it hasnt affected the golden teacher syringe, not that i care about that.

Im wondering though, im careful and clean the jars before they go in the PC and they all have micropore tape and tyvek filters too. How does the water in the cooker every single time i have PF jars in there still manage to get dirty? How does the rice flour escape the jars to leave an annoying layer of dust that doesnt show itself until the jars are dry?

My jars have a sort of triangular/jewel pattern on them so i cant easily just wipe the stuff off either it takes a while.

the jars come out looking no different to when they went in short of that one thing, i cant imagine the contents somehow foaming with what little water is in there, and if it does, it never breaks or even really wets the tape on the lid holes.

These are normal wide mouth canning jars with a rubber seal and two piece lids.

Is it possible maybe this fine dust is from a single stray grain of rice or something missed in the jars threading? or should i PC with a towel in there too instead of just a steel seperator that holds the jars 10-15mm from the bottom?

This is how i want to normally go about refilling syringes that are in their last 20%, with some mini jars containing water that i throw in along with the PF jars to be inoculated, but i dont understand where this leak comes from or how to protect against it.

Are u using a spacer rack for the jars to seperate the jars from the boiling water on the bottom of the PC?

They should be properly lifted via some kind of device or stainless steel object (for example) to prevent the jars from getting to close to the PC boiling water.

Also, maybe there is a small piece of substrate on the OUTSIDE of one of your jars that is mixing with the boiling water in the PC

A pic of the inside of your PC, with it fully loaded, would help as well.

my jars get right in the water, i thought it was ok so long as the jars dont touch the bottom so they dont crack from the heat.

What could be happening is the water is boiling into the jars, mixing with the substrate in the jars, then coming out again.

This can ruin a good PF jar cause it changes the amount of water in your substrate to too much.

How far does the water come up the sides of the jars when u fill the PC with water?

Id bet a million dollars that the white residue is calcium and other mineral
deposits from your water.

When i take my jars out of the pc, there is a white powdery layer covering
everything because i have some seriously hard water.

maybe a third of the way, however my water is actually bore water so that might be the case. It could be a thermally triggered reaction occures where heavy potassium (e.g) compounds react with not so heavy calcium to form much more soluble potassium and much less soluble calcium compounds, like how what happens with say, calcium chloride and potassium or sodium sulfate, though this exchange requires some heat/change in the solute capacity of the water, or its just plainly evaporating and its stupidly heavy that the water is already totally saturated.

It smells like rice so i just kind of asumed it was rice.
Ill run a test, and scrape together a bunch of it off the jar and put a drop of sulfuric acid on the powder, if it pyrolizes or dehydrogenates, or whatever the reaction is called, goes black and burns, it would mean its rice, and if not, its mineral.

Im surprised i didnt think of this, since the bore water buggers up the kettle so often.

Think people used lemon juice in the water when pc'ing to avoid that residue buildup.

Some sort of acid juice.. hmmm must search

I'm thinking Nate guessed it right, Vinegar works well.

i think ill just need to make sure im using rainwater.
i have to purge the pipes for a while before the bore water clears out so, ill just catch some after i shower in a bucket before each PCing so its totally solute free

This. After a cycle I'll notice some residue on some jars. Add a teaspoon of white vinegar to the water in the cooker next time.
