Perlite no humidity
    #23473972 - 07/24/16 10:44 PM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Hello. So... I read SpitballJediS' post, but I don't understand something.

"The fresh air flows in through the bottom holes and rises up through the damp perlite assisting in evaporation."

So where exactly are the bottom holes? Wouldn't the perlite flow through the holes?

Also... right now I have perlite in the plastic container with some water in it, I covered all holes, but I don't see any rise in humidity. :/

The bottom holes are all over the bottom 1/4" holes 2" apart in a grid pattern just like the other 5 sides. The perlite will not fall out of the chamber, maybe a few crumbs when you are filling it up but that's about it.

A properly built sgfc has 1/4in holes spaced 2 inches apart in a grid-like pattern on all 6 sides of your tub. Once you have it built to spec, you then soak your perlite...drain thewater and dump your perlite into your sgfc. Barely any will fall thru the holes, if any at all. Use metal jar rings to elevate the sgfc a little. Once you are finished, I can guarantee you will see your humidity rise. Use a hygrometer to measure rh.

Or build the proven design and stop worrying about trying to measure RH and just look at your cakes. Are they covered in fine beads of moisture? No? Then mist. Yes? Don't mist.

OP already has another thread, I answered some questions over there and didn't reply to the last one right away, so makes this one.

What the fuck would it hurt to build it to spec AND check rh? Sure, we all know the humidity would be 90%+ if it was done right but checking it would be a good indicator that op did do it right.

Because for one hygrometers are mostly inaccurate and tell you nothing about the RH of the microclimate of the cakes (the only RH that is really important) and it can't be measured, it is achieved by misting when needed. You don't want or need to maintain 90%+ RH in a chamber.

Hygrometers just fuck with people's heads and make them do shit like tape up holes when they think they have a problem and don't. In a properly built sgfc the RH will fluctuate between around 50 to 80% and is desired to do so since evaporation is the major pinning trigger. So why not? Because they are useless peices of shit that tell you nothing you need to know in the first place even if they were accurate.

I broke my thumb today. Pilled out. And from 2011. Sorry that I seem a little short.
