ID Help
    #23473369 - 07/24/16 07:44 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Habitat:
They grew in the general area of dead wood, or in dead stumps or logs. Only single mushrooms or two next to each other. Found in the central NJ area.
Gills:
White, bruises brown. Closely spaced/ crowded. Decurrent.

Stem:
Thick white, sometimes scaly looking sometimes baby butt smooth.

Cap:
Diameter varied from an inch to several inches across. White. Depressed. Few scales.

Bruising:
They seemed to bruise brown on the gills, as you can see in a few pictures.

Other information:
The mushrooms had a strong odor when a lot of them were together in a container.

Looks like an Amanita that might be from section Validae, Russula brevipes and Neolentinus lepideus.

Thanks! Do you think they are worth keeping or are they dangerous or useless?

The Neolentinus is edible and delicious.  Nice example of sawtooth gills.

The Amanita is awesome and interesting, you should dry it and send it to Rod Tulloss.  His sequencing backlog is a few months but he will get to it.

The Russula is pretty interesting too, there may be up to 20 species going under that name.  Really needs microscopy and DNA work.  Maybe Mike Davis would want to study this collection.

Shit. I'm new to this and thought they were all the same and kept them in the same container, except the huge one. I have a small bucket of a them.
