I think Oyster...ID request, edibles
    #23473231 - 07/24/16 06:53 PM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Hey, brand new hunter, somewhat successful grower, I found this guy in the woods, among several other similar guys. I wanna get a confirmation because I don't want my kidneys or liver to fail tomorrow.

Habitat: deciduous forest, mostly, decomposing log
Location: Carolina Piedmont
Gills: continuous onto stem, Looks like oyster gills but shorter than any I've grown.
Stem: Dense, mildly chewed on, bout 2 cm diameter
Spore print: None taken, no spores have dropped yet. Seems to be white spores deposited by neighboring mushroom on cap
Scent: Oyster-like?

I'm fairly certain this is an Oyster, growing on a decomposing log, bright white, white spore-looking residue from nearby mushrooms looks like oyster spores in my mono. The gills are the biggest giveaway for me, but I'm also not entirely familiar with what grows here. I wanna get a confirmed ID. it is nowhere near as fluffy as my indoor grown oysters, and my outdoor grows usually ended up a little more soggy and gray due to humidity, though that was late spring. Also, the edges of the cap are curled in somewhat, which my oysters don't do, and the cap is completely round, instead of swooping in at a certain point to connect to the stem. It hasn't rained in a few days, so I assume the spores are mostly dropped by now.

It smells exactly like my monotubs (sporeworks pleurotus ostreatus batch 4-A8 date 9/15), that's my other reason for thinking it's probably an oyster. Pictures below.

Edit: I grabbed one of the smaller ones, as I wasn't sure as to my ID, there was one that had a cap ~13 cm in diameter.

Yes, those are veil fragments. Umm, is it edible? I was thinking of culturing tomorrow. Also, what's the KOH test? As in, I have KOH and can make varying solutions, but what is the result I am looking for? (or, in this case, *not* looking for?)

The cap is not fuzzy, nor is the stem.

Nice! I'll grab the rest on the way to lab tomorrow, and mebbe make a monotub out of these. Plus, I think the local mycology prof would like a bite too.

For the KOH test you simply drop a dilute solution (most people use 5 or 10%) onto the cap and observe if there is any color change over a period of time. Sometimes it happens right away, or sometimes it takes a little while. A negative test means no color change.

Edit: with an eyedropper, in case that wasn't clear
