Making a Play For a Management Position

So the company I am working at, they have some crisis. They have plenty of young design engineers with design experience, and no engineers who know how to take a project and run it out to the end.
The young guys all want the position, because frankly, its a shit-pot of money to manage it, but they have ZERO experience getting a project through the hoops.
Right now, I am learning the job, and though it is hard, I am picking it up pretty fast. I'm going to go for it--I got more time managing engineering projects than these young dudes have as engineers. Some say there may be some butt-hurt and resentment.
I say, so fucking what? I'm the one who knows the management end, so i should get it. They say I don't know the product. But practically speaking, the product can be learned pretty quickly.
So.....I guess I'm going for it. Fuck the butthurt.

By the way, there is a really important point to this thread.

Business is business, if you can get that job then get it. That's what they're trying to do, after all. It's not like they're not trying to get that job

Actually, they aren't trying to get the job. They are all talking about wanting it, but none of them has the stones to ask for it.
Me, I'm walking into the Site Business Manager's Office at 6am tomorrow and telling him 'I'm your 'n....ga'

Right. Well, you do know that is NOT exactly how I am going to phrase it. But that's the point I will make.

It's fair game. I say go for it. At the work place just stick to the rules and make sure they never have a chance to pounce on you.

do it and good luck
now it's story time. my company goes through a lot of changes regularly, they phase out positions on occasion, one such position was supposed to be a skilled trades manager, they had a lube tech that worked for ford come in, he'd been there less than a year and no one liked him in the maintenance department and since the rumor was that they were going to phase the position out within 6 months everyone encouraged him to apply for the position which he did and being the only applicant he of course got the position. 6 months go by and the position still exists, a year. 2 years and now 3 years go by and the position is still there with the same tool running it.
while no one liked the guy, I actually do, he gets his job done, he's not unfriendly, he doesnt make a huge deal out of things and his only real vice is that he is a drunk but he doesnt show up drunk. like you, he knows what it takes to see a project to completion. that's why he still holds the job, it's why the position was never eliminated. he was a good fit.
my company is about to go through a lot more changes, the engineer over me is going into a different department which is actually the department I am in but for some crazy reason it's not the same department, my position is currently in limbo, they want to keep it but they may be looking to put me elsewhere
again, good luck

From everything I know (I went to a university whose good reputation was largely based on the engineering college)moving up to management is a very good move for an engineer. There are so many super smart kids graduating in engineering every year that the market gets crowded despite the high demand for engineers. This is no way a universal truth, and others here have disagreed with me, but engineering is somewhat an up or out profession.
