whats better, pre-cleaned whole weat (rye berries) or WBS with elbow grease
    #23473126 - 07/24/16 06:28 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

For either cubensis or oyster species.

I have 2kg of wild bird seed from a wild gallah i took care of for a while since it was injured, its mostly whole wheat with some smaller yellow stuff, small sunflower seeds and a little corn.
I went to big W the other day and saw they now sell 5kg bags of cleaned whole wheat, and it did look rather clean i must say. Normally you cant get whole wheat outside the odd shop with a health powder section, but there whole wheat costs $5 for 500g.

Anyway, i was wondering which is better, at least for starting out? given the wheat here is already cleaned and seems no different if not cleaner than wheat for human consumption ive seen at some supermarkets.
And ignoring the ease of use what about the efficacy? its my understanding with cubensis bulk sub that the grain is also the main source of food for that grow while for oysters its only a source of nutrients that can be added in through other channels, so really just serves to inoculate the substrate quickly.

As it stands the whole wheat is still more expensive than the wild bird seed. But having never tried to make grain spawn i dont know whats important or which is better, or if it even really matters at all.

Use what's cheap and works for you. Both grains wl work but you may like working with one more. Cost can play a factor too. I wouldn't get hung up on grain choice

I did all my first grain grows with WBS, and it sounds like a pretty similar mix to yours. I chose it because I found a no-cook Tek that seemed really easy. It works but I thought colonization always went pretty slow. Ive simce switched to rye berries and colonization seems to go at least 2-3 times faster IME.

Contrary to Grimsweeper, WBS seems to colonize subs and G2G much faster for me than rye berries.

WBS is much cheaper for me than rye berries and are locally available.

I do, however, like working with rye berries a lot more. Soo easy to perfect the moisture content.

More inoculation points means the seemingly faster colonization of substrates.

Yeah I like rye for how it turns out. Theres always been something kinda beautiful about it to me.

Rye berrie ARE nice to look at in the jar.  Uniform size and moisture. Granted I probably used shitty WBS. Too much cracked corn and I used to double take the black sunflower for contams.
