SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Governor Rauner signed a bill on Monday to help curb the growing number of people selling and using synthetic Cathinones , commonly called "bath salts".
It's the Bath Salts Prohibition Act, making it a class 3 felony to sell bath salts.
That crime comes with a fine of up to $150,000.
Bath salts are chemically similar to amphetamines and cocaine and produce effects such as paranoia, hallucinations, and panic attacks.
They are often sold disguised as common bath salts and have been sold in convenience stores, smoke shops and similar businesses.

Are there any legitimately good cathinones? I've never heard anything good about cathinones as a class of drug.
That does not mean that they should be banned of course (well maybe banned from gas stations and other stupid places to sell drugs like that...). Prohibition doesn't work.

Does the legislature specify "cathinones" or does it just say "bath salts"? If it's the latter, this is a *massive* category of goods, both drugs and regular. It also seems to pave the way for blanket legislation of novel substances in the future.

Here's what it bans: https://trackbill.com/bill/il-sb210-bath-salts-prohibition-act/780115/
Quote:
Defines "bath salts" as any synthetic or natural material containing any quantity of a cathinone chemical structure, including any analogs, salts, isomers, or salts of isomers of any synthetic or natural material containing a cathinone chemical structure. Provides that this includes, but is not limited to, synthetic cathinones as defined in the Illinois Controlled Substances Act, and any related "controlled substance analog" as defined in the Illinois Controlled Substances Act, regardless of how the product is labeled or marketed. Amends the Illinois Controlled Substances Act.
So, it's all cathinones, but this is worded much like the analogue act. Specific chemicals are not named.
It would be interesting to know how this would actually play out in court. I suspect it might be similar to prosecuting someone for an analogue, but have no evidence for this assumption.

No offense man, but you realize you're inadvertently supporting the drug war with this right? I don't even think meth should be illegal... all the ills that seem to come from hard drugs could likely be avoided by not keeping them illegal, weird concept I know.

I'm not supporting bath salts themselves being illegal, I'm supporting, as mentioned in the OP, the SELLING of bath salts. The manufacturing of bath salts.
Just because meth gets legal doesn't mean I want it in every smoke shop.
So no offence taken, I stand by what I said. Good riddance.

Once the good drugs are legal nobody will want to do shitty bath salts anyway
They should make the dangerous ones illegal and the more safe ones legal.

Yeah, you can't ban the selling of something. You can limit the places that it's sold, and you can limit who it's sold to, and maybe you can even limit how much a person can buy, but you can't prevent selling as a whole.
DNM is just the beginning. Tor is a virtually brand new technology. Imagine what this stuff will be like in 10 or 20 years with even more advancements in this kind of technology. We are rapidly approaching a time in which the government can't meaningfully prevent the sale of drugs. We may have arrived already.

you don't seem to grasp the concept that prohibition doesn't work and just increases the amount of problems in society from the drug itself. Not surprising giving the interactions i've had in the past with you on the boards.
Now, answer the question. Who are you to say what I can and can't put in my body?
