Haven't remembered my dreams in years

I had a fairly traumatic experience when I was 15 years old and taken away from home. While I was at this place I had extremely vivid dreams the first month or so where I would get brought back home and when I woke up to find that I was still at this place it would make me absolutely miserable. I started trying hard to not remember my dreams and I'm not exactly sure how I did but it worked. I quit having those dreams or any other dreams for that matter (I mean, I'm sure the dreams are still probably there but I never recall them).
VERY rarely will I have a dream that I'll remember. I can literally count on one hand how many dreams I remember each year.
I've grown past this experience and actually found a way to gain benefit from what happened, but I still can't recall my dreams 6 years later.
Does anyone have any explanations or suggestions? I'd like to start exploring my dreams but it's hard when you appear to seemingly have none.

When you go to sleep turn the light off. It's as simple as that.

i have nothing to offer to help you, but will say this:
as much as possible, take solace in the fact that you can't remember your dreams, good or bad. at one point, 50% or less of my dreams left me feeling well in the morning. within the last year or two, that percentage has dropped to zero. i wake up most mornings crushed by my dreams. granted, this is a reflection of my own dissatisfaction/discontent with life. when i am again able to do so, i hope to make the change necessary to not feel this way. until then....so it goes

It's odd, I wake up as if I had dreamt really good dreams every morning. I never wake up feeling like I had a "bad" experience during my sleep.
I also don't deal with depression anymore and although I'm not satisfied with my life situation, I'm satisfied with who I am so I'm not too worried about the "bad" dreams. And admittedly, the bad dreams are what I'm most intrigued about anyways.

Traumatize yourself, be stressed as much as possible, go into benzo WD, and stop smoking weed. All at the same time
You'll wish you never wanted to dream in the first place lol
Srsly tho just don't smoke weed for 3 days and you'll have guaranteed super vivid dream. It's a common well documented side effect of weed

Oh, that could very well be the reason then. It's very rare I go long without smoking.
Thanks for the reply.

Or just lay off the weed for a week or two. I'm the same, hardly ever remember dreams, yet when Iv'e had the rare break from smoking it I tended to have vivid dreams although not too often. I think the only time I remember dreams lately is when Iv'e woken up early and then gone back to sleep for an hour more (Iv'e been waking and baking for a couple of months now but used to just start smoking it in the early afternoon onwards).
Maybe setting the alarm early just so you can go back to sleep might trigger one of those long abstract dreams..
