Contam or bruising **PICS**
    #2347264 - 02/17/04 08:56 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I was wondering if anyone could identify this. These are two cakes birthed several days ago. There has been this recent development of color on the cakes and I wondered if anyone knew if it was bruising or contams. It doesn't really have a smell to it and it doesn't seem to be growth more or less just discoloration. The spots only appear where the cakes have been handled. I unfortunately handled the cakes a bit since they were very difficult to get out. Also the color doesn't seem to be light enough green to be trich it seems more dark. I just wanted to see if someone could possibly identify it. Also the cake with more color had a tiny fiber coming out of the top peat mix area. I only noticed it because there was a water droplet on it. It seemed to be moving, not moving around on the cake just moving outside. I then removed it and observed and it didnt move. I was wondering if this could jsut be a fiber from the mix and the movement I saw was from air/vibrational movement. There was no blach head on it that I know are on some molds. It appears to just be a hair or a fiber but I want to be overly cautious with this matter. I greatly appreciate any advice.

Well, if you handled the cake, it could be bruising but you would have notice it only a couple seconds after you touch the cakes. I know what you went threw when you had difficulties removing the cake from the jar. Had this problem many times.

But if you say they were birthed many days ago and the blue is quite recent, it's probably not caused by the handling.

Could still be bruising if the cakes are too dry (check your RH in your chamber).

If you get some green mold on your cake, it will grow very fast. You will know for sure it's mold tomorow morning when you wake up.

Did you use grain in your cakes?! I see many exposed grains on the second pic that don't really look covered by myc. Could be a serious contam issue.

good luck.

.fs.

I think you may be right about the green mold. Whatever it is, it has started o get very dark in this one area thatgot cut by a scalpel. Dont ask me why i cut it i cant remember, but I did. But the also i noticed that some areas where the grains are coming outaren't colored. Like there is one larger grain that almost fell off but the inside area where it was originally located is still white. If it is green mold is there anything I can do about it or should I scrape both. Also what is a good way to clean out the chamber that they are in. Since I am going o be introducing several casings in it soon I want it completely sterile. Could I just clean the whole thing with bleach or is it not really necessary.

alright well the spots are much darker i believe its bruising. I have found out that i dont think the cakes are getting enough humidity. I am running a chamber with an ultrasonic humidifier and i have a hole covered with a filter letting air out. I had it running 12 times a day for only 3mins each time. I noticed that the top areas of the chamber are dry so i think the delayed reaction was just due to lack of humidity. So i am increasing the time to 6mins a time and we shall see. There is new growth of the cakes but is only present where i put the excess casing material on top of em.

I wouldnt think it is bruising man. I recently had the same exact shit on 2 of my cakes... the only problem was i didnt bruise them. They where never touched on the bottom where my greenish/ tealish shit was. I chucked out the cakes that had that. The spot didnt show up till like 4 days after they where placed in the fruiting chamber... so bruising from me touching it was out of the question. I truly beleive its a contam... Dont risk it if there with other cakes that look perfect.... ITs your choice, but i would get rid of them.

IMO, That big spot in the middle left side of the first picture doesn?t look too well. I would give it some time and see if it changes or extends.

Ya it is definately bruising. The spots turned out to be a little light in these pics but they turned darker. They havent grown at all just remained in the same spots and the cakes have started pinning nicely too.
