Preparation of wood chip questions

Hey guys, so Ive got a tree service that is going to deliver oak chips fairly regularly, just got a big heap in and its quality stuff. Ive been doing some reading on preparation of woodchips and from what I can tell the typical route is a mixture of woodchips, sawdust (from fuel pellets or just as is) and then a supplementation of some sort of grain, ive noticed wheat bran is a popular one. The mixture is then sterilized and then spawned.
My questions are thus:
Is sawdust essential? I imagine it is for structure and/or water retention as well as making a denser medium, in which case it is pretty damn important. I ask because I can not find a reliable source of sawdust for free, however I can buy fuel pellets when they are available, im just a cheap bastard and would rather work with free materials.
From what I understand about wood substrates, pastuerization should be enough correct? The reason you must sterilize is because of the grain supplementation. if that is true, could you skip the grain all together and instead spawn more colonized grain to make up for the difference? Lets say 25% of your substrate should be grain and you are shooting for 20 liters total, could you make 15 liters of an all wood substrate and then spawn 5 liters of rye grain to it, or must it all be mixed in beforehand?
Many thanks beforehand, first time working with woodlovers, im currently working with Lions mane, reishi and king oyster, id like to get a culture of shitake and pan stripticus (for the hell of it) in the future.

This forum is for psychedelic mushrooms. You'll have much better luck in the appropriate forum.
I'll see if a mod can move it for you so you don't have to re-make

Most dont use wood chips, just sawdust and bran or soybean hulls. Chips can poke holes in your bags. Chips are good for outdoor beds. Your best bet with chips indoor would be pasteurized then mix in your spawn and pack into bags or buckets with holes.

Buckets with holes is exactly what I was planning actually, I would love to use sawdust but I can get chips for free so Id like to work with them as much as possible.
Thanks for the info

you can use HWP or straw to fill in the gap. i dry my wood chip before storing them. when i need them i rehydrate them overnight then pasteurize. i do not supplement so i can get away with pasteurizing them. your bucket idea will work but you have to clean them once they are done. hope this help.
