I'm considering leaving straw behind for supplemented sawdust. anyone have experience with oysters on sawdust? is it more expensive to produce/ is it worth it for oysters?

Gr0wer I believe moved from straw to supplemented sawdust. In one of his last videos here was getting something like 2.5lb of oysters off of a 5lb block in 2 flushes. I think it's really strain dependent. These blocks were grown on pine cat litter supplemented with corn gluten meal. I really should have weighed what I harvested.

Compared to what these produced on paper or cottonseed hulls, these oysters had bigger caps. But they were also fruited outdoors at 50f. I'm pretty sure RR said fruiting at lower temps they mushrooms grow more slowly but at a higher quality.

Nice flushes Par. Are you sterilizing in a PC? How many bags can you do in a run?
Here is a good thread Gr0wer started recently comparing his results.

Hey anthiawe, I'm just getting started myself and am also looking to build a drum sterilizer for bags...In my own brief experience I'm starting to think straw is just too unwieldy. Sawdust on the other hand is compact and usually readily available for free. As was discussed in the other thread I've currently got some oysters on both straw and walnut sawdust and will give a side-by-side comparison of the fruit...morphology, taste, etc. The blocks I made were 4lbs inoculated with 1lb of grain spawn. Here they are at 4 days...I'd say about 95% colonized and it's thick, almost consolidated. On plates, grain spawn and straw this same mycelium has the typical initial whispy or fine appearance which later thickens up. My guess is the sawdust will yield higher and produce better looking and tastier fruits.

Recipe: 6.88lbs sawdust and shavings (kind of course not fine) .8lb (10%) wheat bran .32lb (4%) gypsum 12lbs water
This recipe makes 20lbs substrate. Not sure on the moisture content percentage wise but it seemed right. You might be able to add a pound or so more water. Sounds about equivalent to the 55% mentioned by Gr0wer.
