Helping people on the street who really are down and out on bad luck, whatever

Serious post here. No stories about bike crashes or fecal fart parties.
I've never been homeless. I've always had the knack and the gift of gab to keep myself employed and sheltered. I've never been too poor to buy food or clothing. I've never lived in the projects or settled for dead-end jobs.
I hate the way I feel when I see a homeless person. I turn into a judge. I disgust myself. It's horrible.
I decided to take a risk and have decided to politely approach people in need to understand how they ended up where they are. Some people are obviously scamming. Or are they? Hard to tell without asking.
Have any of you ever been homeless?

i have not been homeless, but have been around all kinds of "homeless" people, be it through jobs or voluntarily interacting with them or being harassed by them. it can be an intriguing "culture"
that being said, i feel it is counter-productive to have sympathy for those in that situation, with the exception of drafted vietnam veterans. homeless people made decisions in their lives that led them to the point they are at. they continue making decisions, every day. while there are all kinds of homeless, good and bad, i feel no need to support them

I do help sometimes, but not often, because the truth is, there are so many people who are homeless in the city who come up to you begging for change. If you handed out $1 to every homeless person who bugged you for money, you'd easily end up giving $10 away in a day.

I give when I have spare change. Even if they're scamming, they probably have it worse than me. Rather help them that way instead of having them rob a store or mug someone.

you, or anyone else, giving them little bits of change is not going to prevent someone with the drive and/or desperation from robbing a person or store

Their stories are often mundane and boring and they will talk your head off if you let them. Best to just let them be, flip em a coin or 2 if you feel bad

I've been homeless a couple times. Once due to surgery, loss of job and also somewhat due to substance use. Longest was probably 5 months in the city but have camped/lived in cars longer. Met my girlfriend of years while living in a van. Had some good times, makes things interesting. I live in a city with a ton of free food options, large homeless population. No excuse for going hungry.

Hated panhandling but did well at it, especially when I was hurt. Always worked hard for a living and felt uneasy about asking for cash. Could pull together $40 or so in a few hours though and was much appreciated. Had some pretty nice gifts of booze, food, smokes, weed, blankets, clothes and even a place to crash once for a couple weeks with this chick I just met (still friends).
I'm pretty good now about tossing change around and smokes. Always have been. All who I see collecting smoke butts now get a smoke from me. I'll cross a street now to give a buttpicker a smoke...

This is kinda why I stopped giving to them, to be honest.
I used to try and make an effort to help a dude out here and there, but idk, I just really got numb to it since I see them in droves around the city

I have never been homeless. I have helped the homeless plenty of times tho. Last time I got off work a couple asked if I had any food they could have to eat that night. I went to taco bell and brought them back 12 soft tacos so they would have enough for dinner and later.
There have been other times when I have bought them food. Most of the time if they just ask for cash I say no. However there have been times when I just buy them beer for the hell of it.

I didn't beg for no money. But what is really sad, when I was really, really sick with HCV, in 2010~2012, and I was in graduate school, in between semesters i didn't have a place to live, I couldn't stay with my father for the summer--his wife protested--and I couldn't stay with my mother because her husband said--'HES A MAN--HE SHOULD HAVE A JOB!'
LOL. OK. So I slept in some campgrounds, it was cool.
You will notice if you go to a country like China, or Japan, the family will always help out who isn't making it.
Sad that the US doesn't have this cultural thinking.

I don't give them money unless they have mental problems and couldn't work if they wanted too or if I think they're really in a bad spot and aren't just being lazy beggars. Still its very rare. I try to help the people close to me first

I often times watch serpentza on youtube the original China Vlogger. I can believe what you are saying about family there from what I have learned from his channel. China's actually a pretty cool adventurous place. I'm not a fan of their government for obvious reasons but the people are pretty cool and there are some good perks about the culture.

????I'm saying they have good family values--they take care of their families. Contrast that to the US where, a family member who is down on his luck is put on the street because 'He's a man, he should be working...'
