Dehydrator Options

I've pretty much settled on the Excalibur because it is family owned, has a good rep, and the products have significant drying surface area.
What I can't figure out is why there is a $50 difference between the model with a timer and without.
I can buy an outlet timer for $15 or even less. Is there a reason that a built-in timer would be significantly better?

i dont see why. i would just save that money. no need for a timer on a dehydrator. you dry until your fruits get completely dry. and no timer can time that, since it can take longer/shorter depending on the fruit.
not to mention that you cant really "over dry" them. i let mine stay in for a few hours after the biggest are cracker dry, and snap into dust, just to make sure they are all completely dry. dont want any to rot/lose potency from not being dry.

A timer is not really needed unless you have multiple uses planned. 160-165F for about 4-6hrs is all it takes for full trays. I use my presto dehydro for a bunch of other stuff and it has variable temps and timers. That one costs around $75, so if you are only using one for cultivation a cheaper one for around $40-50 will be all that you need.

Best way to go if you are just drying mushrooms is to get the cheapest one possible, 35-45$ Nesco or presto. I have the variable dehydro as well, they are nice if you use them for other things too but as said just for mush you don't need temp control since we just run them at max anyway. After a while a dehydrator will burn out, save your box take it back to Walmart or wherever and get a replacement.

I got a $35.00 wally wold special and wired it to a $5.00 lamp dimmer from home depot to vary the heat on it. Eventually replaced the craptastic fan motor with a small induction fan motor from a dead microwave oven. Result is a dehydrator that can be used from room temp to 165 degF with about 3 times the original airflow. Having variable heat allows it to dry a lot of things that would be damaged at full heat such as melon seeds.
