Here in Colorado, the yellow morels start coming up around the end of April, typically when the cottonwood leaves are about the size of a quarter. They keep coming up until late May. The black morels start around mid May when the aspen leaves are still small and I have found black morels as late as mid August at high altitude.

You can usually do best with determining season for morels by watching what flowers are in bloom or which plants are leafing out.

For example, when the poison ivy starts leafing out is around the end of yellow morel season. When the wild peas start flowering is when the black morels are about done.

Happy mushrooming!

Here is a progress map for 2004. One sighting so far, and in very southern california. You'll see links to the 2003, 2002, and 2001 progress maps.

Good link. They've had those maps for a few years now.

If you find some, go out there and add your finds to the list so the maps will be even better next year (that's for everybody).

Happy mushrooming, and good luck finding them morels!
