Yeah, I didn't think it would colonize that quick, APE just loving the steel cut oats. I guess maybe because it is such a small substrate helps too. You can see that the cut oats made for a great amount of tiny inoculation points in the one picture as well.
Excited to see some fruits come out of this thing, should be quite interesting when/if it does fruit. I wonder what they will look like and how big they may get, how much effect does substrate size really have on fruit size?
I have seen some micro shrooms come off of single grains and stuff before, crazy how they can grow that small compaired to how big the normal fruit bodies get, yet still look almost the same. Here is an example from a tub wall way back, this is a B+ fruit smaller than the tip of a toothpick.

I guess we just have to wait and see...

You may want to raise your temp I see the Pres is doubling down on the jackets while working there. Probably not ideal temps

I have had quite large ones on small substrates.

I had one grow in a discarded tub which I put a very small amount of bulk mix into. It twisted around the tub and dried up afterwards in it leaving a spore print on the side of the tub. As your mini tub has clips it could get quite distorted inside. I had shrooms pop the lids off tubs with low lids, but yours cannot escape.

I literally just pulled a 25 gram wet mushroom off the smallest tub I've done. Last flush was like this too. One huge mushroom.

I believe this to be, at least partially, attributed to the large amount of headspace in your growing chamber (jar) vs the sub. There's a lot of room for the fruit to stretch. I predict much smaller fruits in this mini due to a lack of stretch space, and hopefully that leads to a denser pinset
I'm also very excited to see how it turns out!!

i really think the amount of headspace has little to do with the size a mushroom will grow. havent you ever let a jar fruit in-vitro before? the mushrooms will still grow the size they would have, it seems, but they will just twist around and curl up and zigzag in there.
same with letting an agar plate pin and letting that pin go on to maturity. it will hit the top of the plate(pasty plate) and then curve around and zig zag until it is done growing.
just an observation.

micro shrooms arent too hard to get. Just forget about a petri haha

it'd be really cool to see miniature APE, never worked with ape but i don't see why it wouldnt put out mini fruits especially if FAE is limited

What about mushrooms like this one? B+ is well known for producing massive mushrooms, yet it is the size of a toothpick tip.

So clearly smaller substrates do have an effect on mushroom size, this is from one grain of substrate. The question is, when/how does it become a factor? I see it as a last resort mechanism, to get out one last tiny mushroom to try and continue the cycle, when there is almost no nutrition left.
I have seen pins on agar too and most of them been very tiny like the one in image I posted above.
This APE culture is known for spitting out tiny little mushrooms to begin with though, and is the reason I used it for this application. I do still wonder how big they may get on such a small substrate as well as how the pinset may turn out, we will see soon enough if it decides to fruit.

nah yeah, i was referring to how he said the head space that the mushroom has matters, not the amount of sub.

Yeah, that is what I want to see as well. I'd like to grow B+ or something in this maybe after, to see if the mushrooms all curl up and cram themselves inside. But this may not be the best culture to test that with. The last time I grew them, they got short and fat, most were very small too. I grew them in a 16L mini tub last time. The pinset was great, I had many fruits, they were just so damn tiny and hard to pick. Thought it would be perfect for this micro tub though.

Edit:
Here is a pic of the tub I'm talking about I just found. (Sorry for poor quality best I could do with what I have right now)
