Mould or bruising?
    #23464859 - 07/22/16 04:18 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Seems to be on the end of a few grains but as its first time with grains I'm unsure what this is. If someone could let me know. I have isolated the jars from the others and will bin as soon as I find out.

Already shook twice to get to this point. Recovered both times

Looks bacterial. I see the first signs of the mycelium reacting to bacteria, which is those long strands extending out from previously colonized grains.

Also if u shook twice and still have that big of an uncolonized patch... chances are high for bacteria. Shaking should produce even colonization, without big patches like that.

Depends. Are you one of those people that will go through a lot of trouble for just a few shrooms? Try a dryer prep.

Nah not fussed got loads more jars on the go. That is hawain cubes and the agar got infected plus now it looks like the grains are bacterial, my Ecuador MS however is doing great after G2G.
What is dryer prep?

I don't know how you prep your grains. But something that might help is to lower the moisture content of the finished grains by altering your process to achieve this. You will have to figure that part out, as you know your process and I do not.

looks more like a case of dirty inoculant to me. bacteria wouldn't be my main concern with such whispy weak mycelium. I suspect mold too.

The grains in the jars pictured were too dry to start with. I soaked longer with my second batch and achieved a more adequate moisture level. They are rocking along while these were very slow and whispy...

If your grain prep is on, thenkeep trucking. Sometimes this just happens. No big deal. Happened to me on my last jars and I've been prepping the same way since time began.

Of course. Take a very small section from a leading edge that looks clean.

Shake the jar and see how it recovers

I would take a transfer from anywhere along the red line I drew on your pic, far away from the sketchy (possible) satelite contams

no, if it looks healthy DURING recovery, not after, and is 100% done in 24-48hrs its good. most likely. but I have serious doubts  only 1 way to find out!

take a pic when the grains start fuzzing up again, that's when its the most visible IMO, when its all white its harder to tell.
