Anyone Notice Something On Amazon.com about pricing?
    #23464312 - 07/21/16 10:39 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

there is a lot of stuff, like, suddenly you can order it, and get it from China or Japan, and it is about 30% cheaper than the US dealers sell it for.  A lot of things--I'm talking about electronics, musical equipment, etc--aren't even being sold by US dealers online anymore because the Japanese and to some extent Chinese have really undercut them.

For an example, i noticed that some top of the line Japanese made drumsets that used to be sold by US retailers for like $3000 are being sold by Japanese  vendors for $2000.  Seems they are trying to drive US middlemen out of the market.

Is it good or bad?

Well why don't they make things here cheaper. Is it greed?

In order to make something here is it just so specialized that it has to drive up the price? What is it? What's stopping things from being made here cheap, is it lack of mass production?

Should these types of things encourage homeland produced items?

I'm just trying to understand...

We get cheap stuff and they get whatever profits they make off it. It's good and bad.

A set of Pearl reference Drums made in Japan is hardly what you call 'cheap stuff'

I think it has more to do with US middlemen putting huge margins on stuff.

I don't see any way this can be good economically for the US, outside of increased buying power for a limited time (before our economy tanks from being reliant on others for too long).

At this rate the only thing keeping the dollar floating is our military
While I philosophically approve of using force for economic gain on a national level
That force should be tempered with a sound economic policy in general...

Not offshoring production, continuing manufacturing at competitive levels, halting illegal immigration, etc.

There's that too, but Yamaha for example has a reputation for quality which is essentially unmatched in regards to musical instruments. The consistency and value of their instruments are absurd.

We should be competing at that level, but a quality American instrument will be made in Mexico and sold for 150% the value of the equivalent Yamaha.

yea.  You know, Saga Musical Instruments of San Fransisco makes a line of guitars in China called 'Blueridge' these fucking guitars are as good or better as the equivalent martin US made models--at 1/3 the price.  In fact they may be better.  Superior workmanship and materials, I would be really edgy if I was martin.  It seems a lot of companies rely on their name and forget about value.

It's good for the consumer and it increases competition. It should drive companies to develop better/cheaper products to better compete.

If a company's crappy product can't even compete with a cheap Chinese knockoff then they really need to rethink their business

I feel like this has been the case for years. I've routinely ordered stuff from overseas on Amazon.

It's cheaper to produce in China. Pretty simple reason as to the "why."

It may be terrifying to think about but now Japan is the only place you can get one of these.

Some are scams and it takes forever to ship that was my experience trying to save a few bucks ordering a hard drive from china.

Also good thing for Amazons guarantee policy as I doubt the sellers from over there care much about an American complaint.
