The Plan (since I can't post in Getting Started forum)
    #23463922 - 07/21/16 08:39 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

First, please move this post to the Getting Started forum.

For some reason, I can't start new threads there.  No idea why.  I've searched the rules and can't figure it out.

Here is my understanding of the grand plan behind all of these teks.  These are the fundamental steps that will take the user from a spore to mass production.  I think there's a diagram of this in one of Stamets books but I thought it might be useful written out here.

Start with a mushroom

Get a mushroom and ...
  • Spore print -> spore syringe -> agar plate -> strain isolation
  • Clone the mushroom onto an agar plate

... then create slants for long term storage
Once you have slants

Take a small piece from the slant and ...
  • Grow out on agar plate -> dice agar plate and add to grain
  • Grow out in liquid culture -> shoot liquid culture into grain

Make more! (optional)
  • Grain to grain transfers until you have enough spawn.

Use the grain
Add the grain to ...
  • A lean bulk substrate (such as unsupplemented sawdust or wooden dowels) if you'd like to make spawn -> use spawn to inoculate logs, trees, etc. -> harvest mushrooms
  • A rich bulk substrate (such as supplemented sawdust, manure, straw, etc) if you'd like to make mushrooms -> Induce fruiting and harvest mushrooms

I wanted to post this because I didn't see it posted in a clear, concise step-by-step plan anywhere else.  If I missed it somewhere, my apologies for taking your time.

Please note that this isn't comprehensive by any stretch ... I'm just thinking through the basic version of how to grow mushrooms from start to finish.  There's lots of other ways covered in these forums on how to do this.

Nonetheless, I hope this was useful in some way.
