leaving spawn bags in sterilizer
    #23463379 - 07/21/16 05:38 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Hey all

So I use a sterilizer with a stopcock valve and dont use tyvek sleeves in my bags anymore. I just accordian fold them, with trivets on top and a heavy plate.

I let the PC cool overnight but haven't been avle to get to innoculating them for a day or two now. I hacent opened it obviously but Im sure ita lost some of its vacuum.

Anyways just wondering how long its ok to keep the sterile bags sealed in the PC befote its no good to use them?

ThAnks!

Well, if they are truly sterile, indefinitely.
I wouldn't push it past a week.

Haha

Well do you know what I mean, like the next morning after the PC is cool and you open the stopcock valve breaking the vacuum makes a hissing noise... but after a day or two you lose the vacuum so some air must creep in  right?

I don't think my presto makes a vacuum. I think it can draw in air from under the weight.

Does it matter?
You just sterilized and your bags have filters.
If they are close to sterile, a few days shouldn't be a problem.
I'd put them in the fridge to prevent any remaining contaminants from germinating until you can inoculate.

No only PC with stop cock valve pull a vacuum.

Have you worked with spawn bags before? They aren't pre sealed before you PC cycle. Using a regular weighted PC I fold a tyvek sleeve into the bags to filter the dirty air that gets pulled in as they cool.

They kinda "vacuum seal" up (like photo)  and you can take them out in open air to move in front of flow hood. They can actually stay out like that for a couple days.

With a sterilizer with stopcock valve, I just accordian fold the bags down without tyvek, because the sterilizer doesn't draw in dirty air.
I usually take it off the stove after its cooled and open it in front of my flow hood.

But this time I couldn't get to it for a couple days. Just wondering if its still cool to use
