online personas 2

Have you noticed that many people are really different in person from their online persona? I find that really interesting... like it's all the stuff we don't get to say and do in our personal lives that makes up our online persona. In a sense, our online persona is a manifestation or a representation of our shadow selves, and this forum is where our shadows go to hang out with other people's shadows.
People who have met me online and then in person were surprised to learn that I am not exactly the argumentative douchebag that I am online.
I recently met with a Shroomery friend and what I found funny about her, is that she's not really a troll around here at all, but in person she's full of fake-mean deadpan sarcasm. I always expect the reverse to be true, that people are trolls online but less so in person, so it took me a while to suss her out

if you've seen Eyes Wide Shut, the experience on here is similar to the ritualistic masks that they wear on that movie. i like it, what you're talking about. oddly enough i've found that high school buddies that i knew really well are exactly the same online like on facebook. but meeting someone online first and then in person is totally different.

I haven't really met anyone in person who I knew well online first, just a couple of people I did deals with off a coin site and one guy off Reddit who was a student in a class I was a TA for. I would be up for meeting people from here but never had the opportunity. I think my own persona on here is pretty similar to how I act with people I know, but I'm a lot more antisocial when meeting strangers or dealing with big groups of people. Unless I get really drunk.

I'm pretty similar in real life. Like others though, I can be antisocial when meeting new people. Takes me a while to open up, and them I'm really social. Never considered meeting anyone here because there's a pretty good chance it could be an awkward experience. Not always, there are some people I jive with instantly.
I'd be more down to meet people in a concert or music festival environment as opposed to a kick it environment. Easier for me to let loose like that.

edit: i forgot i pissed of zippoz/capitalisticnomad at one fest. i was pretty spun and enjoying life, and it rubbed him the wrong way

Yeah, same. It can take me a bit of time for to really come out of my shell with a new person. I've been told that my in-person self is a lot "softer" than my online persona, but as I've softened my online persona quite a bit recently they're probably more similar now than they used to be.
I think it's funny that I used to pick so many fights about really personal matters and then feel hurt by what gets said. I'm really quite sensitive, so I should have known better and protected myself instead of making a big deal out of everything. Live and learn. I'm guessing that I've gravitated toward argumentation online because it's something you never really get to do in person, and the opportunity to confront and challenge people with different views without alienating anybody in your personal life is seductive. It's especially true on a site like the Shroomery where people aren't attached to their real names or necessarily to pictures of themselves and you don't have your friends and family all there to see you acting like a belligerent turd

I find it's kind of funny sometimes meeting people that other people know from the internet. My wife and I have some friends who will have parties with internet randoms who they met off this fetish site, and it's weird seeing how a lot of them seem to interact in person as if they are on the site, awkwardly staging these "scenes" to take pictures of and then post. Like nobody seems to really be that into it, they're just trying to look cool to feed this online persona.

I'm basically exactly the same person IRL as I am here.
But you're right - I've seen through the chinks of a few members online persona's and I've also found myself incredibly baffled by why people do it.

Yeah I ran into some problems with that when I first started getting active on the site again around 2011 or something. Most of the time now I just keep it light and stay out of threads that I have some personal stake in arguing. There are also a lot of details of my life that I never mention on here because I don't want people "getting" to me with them.

Yeah, I can tell you it really sucks when you can't just have a normal conversation without somebody constantly waving something like that in your face. It's incredibly frustrating. But, as I've stopped making myself into an issue, so other people have, too. And I'm surprised at how ready the community here has been to let the past be in the past. It's been really heartening to be given that opportunity to change for the better. I've been getting on much friendlier terms with so many people who I used to consider antagonists. I've learned that people usually take the chance to be friendly if you just give it to them and that is way more worthwhile than fighting all the time.

Most of the people i've met online were that way in real life. Lots of people don't try to make up shit about themselves to hide. I'm this way in real life for the most part, but communicating irl is harder because i can't type out or think out my responses in the same manner.

How since 2010 have you met 35 people from the shroomery who have identified their user names to you in person?
Not saying it's impossible.. just seem's unlikely.. Different locations.. and security means and such...
Maybe every one decided to reveal their identity's at a shroomery gathering? I don't think it would happen but...
maybe you are just being sarcastic.

why wouldn't people reveal who they post as at shroomery gatherings?
i usually meet shroomery people in an organized and pre-meditated fashion. i usually don't just happen to run into them on street corners, altho that happened to me once before

Interesting. I'm sure he has met people. I wonder if he would drop some names.
Unless that's to much info. But if they are loose about identity's at a shroomery gathering it probably would not matter.

ahhh I see. It's good to know nothing like casualty's have happened. I'm very cautious about my surroundings. Imagine if some one brought a gun and shot every one up haha.
I'm just being silly tho.. I would HOPE no one would ever do that. Then again I assume this shit is not posted publicly and works threw invites which would make me feel safe.

People are completely different in person. I've never met someone in person who was anything at all like what they were online. That probably includes myself
I guess it's just different not seeing a person, just seeing text, and just viewing yourself as a collection of words. It's just such a completely different environment that it kinda makes sense that we'd all be really different online. I mean look at how different online interaction is vs real life interaction. No voices, no yelling, no danger, or sadness, or physical attraction, or fear, or intimidation, the list goes on and on.
There's nothing here but words, it kinda makes sense that we'd be different in a place where only words exist.

This is true. There is no intimidation. Some one may be willing to say something threw text that they certainly would not when face to face even if it's what they really wanted to say rather expressing a idea and opinion or a insult.

I am pretty similar imo to my online self, although probably slightly more polite and soft-spoken irl. I have never met a shroomerite so I have no knowledge of this phenomenon

No guns are a rule for my gathering. Someone brought a gun and killed themselves at a gathering long ago before I was around

Yeah. And I've had a few people try to question the rule. I just tell them then they're not invited. Strangers, psychedelics, and guns are not a good combination

That's what I'm saying man this would be some serious shit. It's why I would never cross the line and go to one of these things.
I'm not judging any one for doing it but it's just not for me personally. Not just within this forum but any online engagement assertion.

Certainly. I have a friend who carry's a gun and I feel he SERIOUSLY will not take me serious on putting his fucking gun away if we go to use mushrooms. I did a very light dose with him and he did not take it off. I told him to that last time. I mean a light light dose. Some how he swiveled my attention. Why can't people feel safe for 8 hours with out a fucking gun on their hip at their own house. I carry and own, I don't mind not having it on me all the time. I'm NEVER taking shrooms with him again unless he puts the fucking gun away. I don't want to be mean or rude to him but it's not funny to me, as a gun owner. I take that shit serious.
I'm a gun supporter. I carry a bunch. But I do not feel the need to have it on me when using serious mind altering substances. I don't feel so unsafe in my area that I can't go with out it while getting a serious high from mushrooms.

That almost sounds like a sitcom episode where a character buys a gun and ALWAYS carries it around everywhere, even in their own home for no reason, and all the other characters are weirded out/want him to stop at least in his own home

You know I don't mind if he has it on him in his own home or any where in life. But if I'm to every consume mushrooms with him again in the future, who knows when maybe years maybe a month who knows right? He's got to put that shit away.
I will admit I do get annoyed by people that feel the need to ALWAYS have a gun on them I mean ALWAYS must have it on them even when trying something completely new like a full tripping dose of magic musrhooms he may feel the need. This is what pisses me off. No just because you feel the need does not mean it's okay at all. And it pisses me off that they are so addicted to carrying that it annoys them to take it off for something like mushrooms. People who carry guns like that.. that's what pisses me off. There's no damn need for it when tripping on mushrooms, it's just not safe.
This is what I emphasizing on here. People that ALWAYS have to have a gun on them even when trying something new like a heavy dose of magic mushrooms for the first time.
That's what annoys me. It annoys me that I would have to tell a gun owner to put it away before doing something like that. Why do I have to do that? Why the FUCK should I have to tell some one that?
It's like put that shit away when your using a drug like this type.
But fuck.. maybe I'm just wrong... maybe he would put it away when using a known for sure large dose.. I just remember last time he did not on what was known to be a small dose.. that makes me angry.. should I be upset about some one not putting a gun away on a small dose?
a level 1 experience.. sorry for ranting..

I'm pretty much the same, more or less... though I'm definitely more of a writer than a speaker.. pretty introverted IRL. I prefer telepathy actually.

Yep, pretty much. Internet interactions are honestly way closer to telepathy than in-person interactions. That's at least the case for me, because I type at 120 wpm and have natural verbal skills. There are fewer obstacles to expressing my thoughts in a setting like this. It's a whole different ballgame when I'm in person. I have social anxiety and ADHD so I routinely stutter or forget what I was saying halfway through a sentence. Because of that I tend to be relatively soft-spoken and simple in conversation. It means that I leave a lot of things unsaid, things which I go on to say here or somewhere else online, where I can organize my language effectively. That's what I mean when I say a person's online persona is a shadow of what they're like in person. It's certainly the case for me, at least, and I'm sure for many others as well, for all sorts of reasons.
I've seen a few responses implying that an online persona must be some kind of deliberate fabrication. But it's not like my online persona is a fabrication, it's just a different side of my personality than what gets expressed in person-- just as authentic, but naturally different.

Eh, I think I probably come off pretty similar, idk what the most consistent impression people get of me at first irl - I think in most social situations where I'm not totally uncomfortable then I come off as laid back and simultaneously extroverted(I'm not, just a good faker) and introspective. Most people probably see me as your usual artsy kind of girl and I get told a lot that I seem very innocent and unassuming until they get to know me a bit better or we start getting down to brass tacks and having a real conversation.
The biggest thing that might not translate over my posts is that, as far as first impressions I can sometimes come off a little haughty and aloof and maybe even a little snobby in varying degrees depending on how well I'm peopling that night, or how sarcastic I'm being(because half the shit I say is in jest or making fun of myself but obviously someone who didn't know me well wouldn't get that). Like some girls have completely misinterpreted everything about me and have made me feel like shit over it mid conversation, I don't think I'm better than anyone and I'm not trying to be I'm just trying to be happy and be the best me I can and I'm always super hard on myself and even if I don't necessarily share the same tastes in music/movies/drinks/anything as someone I would never scoff at someone just for being different or think that I was better than someone for a superficial choice that is in no way a reflection of their character or anything that matters - I think judging someone for those things is more a reflection of the judger than the judged - but I think sometimes I carry myself in a way where I seem snobby or pretentious to certain people unless and until we actually talk.
I think I'd get along fine with most people on this site though - I always immediately jive well with open minded types that can just chill.

Yay, excited seal! I'm seriously wearing my seal onesie right now. I've had it on all day except for when i went to pick up booze and i put my seal shirt from harpseals.org on. So yeah, i guess my shroomery persona has close ties to my IRL one in ways. I'm completely honest on this website.

What, my seal onesie? No, i just washed it before today. There was cum on it from one ov my lovers prior. The front is buttoned and i sucked his immensely hot uncut cock through it as he wore it. No animal fetish thing or anything, he was just wearing it when we got playful. It is extremely comfy after all.
