sawdust blocks - best prep? worth it
    #23463127 - 07/21/16 04:20 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

How can I prepare saw dust blocks for edibles? what is the fastest prep method and is it worth it or is straw too east to change?

I have been growing oysters with another shroomery guy PsilocyBen17 and have been thinking about how to fruit more than oysters, of course the problem of saw dust comes into the picture. is it worth it and how can i do it efficiently?

Video on how i make shiitake bags. You can easily scale it down to a batch that fits into your pressure cooker. I steam for 24 hours in my 1500w sterilizer 220 lbs of bags at a time. Shoot for 55% moisture by weight and around 5-6 lb bags.

Cool video, gr0wer. In most videos I see involving sawdust bags, I see them avoiding presealing and using a Tyvek sleeve in the open bag. Do you get away with this because you're steaming and not using a PC?

Its effectively the same thing, some people get away with no tyvek and no sealing. I had bad results without sealing. Tyvek sleves cost money and you need to maintain and stock them. Sealing takes about 10 seconds, ensures nothing gets in and i already had the sealer.

Oh, I thought the Tyvek sleeves could be reused for years, according to RR and others. I need to research more into edibles so I can understand bag work. Thanks for the reply.

Hey Gr0wer, thanks for the video. what is at the bottom of your sterilizer? I have seen mushroom production in Ghana and they sterilize in a metal barrel with a lid while a partial skid is in water for the bags to be propped up on while they sterilize; would this be similar to your set up? or is this doable? Also are the bags very expensive? I have seen some spawn bags prices and it always makes me jump!

Thanks!!

THe bags are like $0.35 each, I use a element at the bottom with a float valve and false bottom, i have a video on my youtube channel that goes over the design.

Yes they can but i can only imagine you need to dry them, keep them clean then spend time setting them up in each bag. Its just an unnecessary step, my goal is to no longer use any sealing and just let the bags seal themselves like i do in my lab. With all the handling and toting around i do currently it was disturbing the seals and i was seeing contams so i started to pre seal. My new setup i wont be handling the bags as much, they will get steamed and be carted right into the lab next to the sterilizer.

If you're using a fair amount of tyvek I've found it's cheaper to just buy it at the fabric store by the yard than to get sleeves.  Pretty sure I get it for less than 2$ per square yard.

It's Espoma and just search and you will probably find it at your Home Depot or Amazon.

There's allot of Espoma products..
Grower is using Plant-tone.

From the comments on Growers You-tube:

Published on Mar 20, 2016

This is how i make my shiitake grow bags for my indoor mushroom grow. They can also be used for oyster mushrooms, lions mane, king oyster mushrooms, or just about any mushroom. Although for oyster mushrooms i use soybean hull and fuel pellets. They are ~20% bran supplemented oak fuel pellet bags.

2x 40 lb bags of oak pellets
20 lbs wheat bran
5 lbs gypsum
2 lbs epsoma plant tone
15 gals hot water

this makes ~240 lbs sub and fills my 55 gal drum to the top with grow bags. The bags are unicornbags.com L bags with .5 micron filter.

How does it affect yields?
