This cannot be P. cubensis because Psilocybe cubensis is a subtropical mushroom and does not grow north of about North Carolina. It is almost always growing from cow dung.
here is a post that is stickied to the top of the MH and I board. It has more information about this mushroom and related mushrooms.

Really? Are you sure they're not cubensis? They look pretty close to me and also they're not done growing. Maybe the others will give a clearer indication. I'll post a pic as an update soon

Looks like Psilocybe cubensis growing on half spent substrate.

That's a good point. It does look a lot like P. cubensis. If you tossed spent cakes outdoors then perhaps...
To rephrase more correctly, it's not that it cannot grow in nj, it's that it is outside of its native/wild range.

How so? Also, when should you pick the mushrooms? When the cap just recently opens?

This is nothing like Amanita and is certainly Psilocybe cubensis.

They have achieved most if not all of their psilocybin content as soon as the veil breaks. Anywho you are safe to eat the TI already I'd them.

He edited the first post and added totally different pictures, the first pic (and originally only pic) he posted was a lot less conclusive

Well now that youve updated, like Ghostly said. The first pictures were totally different. But what youve edited look like Cubensis. Nice find being in NJ.
