Red States Are the Real America, 2000 Election Facts Show

Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law, St. Paul, Minn., points out some interesting facts concerning the most recent presidential election:

Population of counties won by:
Gore=127 million
Bush=143 million

Square miles of land won by:
Gore=580,000
Bush=22,427,000

States won by:
Gore=19
Bush=29

Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by:

How can Bush have lost the popular vote if it was 143 million to 127 million in his favour?

Those are classic examples of meaningless statistics.

The population of counties statistic is obtained by saying that if you have a county with 20,000 people in it, and 500 voted for Bush and 400 for Gore then you assign all 20,000 people to Bush (and vice versa if the votes were reversed).

You can derive the other statistics similarly.

They basically derive from Bush doing well in rural areas and Gore in urban areas.

And, as pinky noted, voter turnout in elections in the US is considered high if 40% of the registered voters actually bother to vote.

Your explanation is incorrect.

The numbers provided count the total populations of the counties won by each candidate--including those too young to vote, those who can vote but don't, and those who did vote.

Of course, large percentages of the people in the counties "won" by either candidate actually voted for the other candidate.

Gore won the popular vote, which is the aggregate number of votes cast irrespective of county or state.

Correct. However, we have no way of knowing the demographics of the counties themselves. Is it logical to assume the counties which went to Gore had a higher percentage of children (for example) than those which went to Bush?

This would seem counterintuitive. After all, is it not those voters with "traditional family values" who tend to vote conservative? And is it not true that those families with traditional values tend to have more kids (partly but not exclusively due to their opposition to abortion -- or even to other methods of birth control in some cases) than those with less traditional values?

...those who can vote but don't...

Hence my statement -- "In America, not all those eligible to vote do so."

Not at all.

Gazzbut was wondering how Gore could win the popular vote when the collective population of the counties won by Bush was larger than the collective population of the counties won by Gore. Your statement, "In America, not all those eligible to vote do so," did not properly explain the discrepancy. The correct explanation is that the numbers given by LDS count all voters and non-voters, and also reflect a "winner take all" approach in which the winner in a county is credited with the support of everybody in that county, even if he won with a plurality of less than 50%.

Look closely at the numbers:

Population of counties won by:
Gore=127 million
Bush=143 million

The total, 270 million, is the entire population of the United States. Obviously that includes all minors and everybody else ineligible to vote (such as non-citizens).

Correct. However, we have no way of knowing the demographics of the counties themselves. Is it logical to assume the counties which went to Gore had a higher percentage of children (for example) than those which went to Bush?

I neither made such an assumption nor did I imply it. I was merely trying to explain the discrepancy to Gazzbut in a clear and comprehensive fashion, because you obviously had failed to do so.

So you are saying because my statement was not comprehensive, it was therefore incorrect?

Incomplete -- I can concede that. Incorrect? Nope.

Two-inch dick, you are brilliant. My post in another thread (What if....) referred to the Democrats effort to register felons and idiots. I think you responded there. Now you have shown why they are so desperate to do so, demographically. This with your "Media bias" thread has confirmed you as a truly brilliant thinker, a tirelessly researcher, and someone with far too much time on his hands. Love Z
