First grow - jars, colonization and such
    #23460209 - 07/20/16 05:27 PM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Hi there!

I've reading reading here a LOT.  You all have created a wealth of info here, thanks!  About a month ago decided to take the plunge with a BRF jar cakes.  This is for personal and sparse use, a few ounces could last me the rest of my life.  I'm using both my own made and sterilized jars and some pre-made jars.  Wish I would have not done the pre-made but live and learn.

Knocked up 14 jars June 30 with KSSS and Cambodian.  3 didn't grow for a few weeks and I threw them out.

In my noobiness my sterile procedures during inoculation were not, shall we say, "tip top" but nonetheless there is mycelium growing.  I fear that some jars may be bacterial but it's hard to identify for me.

One homemade jar might be a little wet hasn't colonized the bottom, so I flipped it for GE.  I fear it may only be going around the outside of the jar. Please ignore all the sharpie all over everything, I'm a newb with a science experiment haha.

KSSS - 3 best jars.  The jar to the left is the most colonized jar, about 99% covered with mycelium.  It has collapsed a little inside the jar, I understand this will happen as the substrate is eaten and shrinks.  The other jars are 75%ish colonized.

Three of the cambodian jars.  I made a few small jars they are stacked and 50-60% colonized. The big one has some nice rhizo growth but it's a little see-throughish.

So a few questions if any of any of you can comment I would appreciate it.

1.  Do these jars look alright?  Bacteria or smushed wet vermiculite or both?

2.  My plan is to do a few different birthdays of multiple jars that are through the consolidation phase.  So like two or three different birthdays of 5ish jars each.  This will allow me to create microclimates of multiple cakes close together in the SGFC.  Is that a good plan?

3.  Finally, I plan on taking one cake and doing an outside flower pot tek my garden.  This is somewhat of a backup plan in case the S hits the F in the SGFC.  What plant do you recommend that has a harmonious relationship with the cubensis species (shade, nutrients?, IDK?)  Also should I add a touch more of compost or a casing to the flower pot?    I've read up on the flower pot but nothing too comprehensive.

4.  I messed up and didn't label everything.  Just a confession.  There are 2 jars that I don't know what it is KSSS or cambo, I may recognize the abnormal fruits of KSSS but who knows.  I thought I would "remember", riggggggght.  Lesson to label.

I wouldn't flip the jars even briefly, keep they upright.

Jar in photo #2 looks toast, I would nominate that for your outdoor grow.

Plenty of those jars are looking good so far, carry on.

I know it's hard to be patient during your first grow, but with the PF tek it's so important!

Multiple birthdays is silly. I mean unless it's going to be a couple weeks apart, you should always try to birth as many cakes at once as you can so as you said you get the most efficient microclimate.

Just be patient and get to full colonization! If the mycelium is growing and making progress, you're good.

The less you touch your jars, the better they'll be.

I have 12 KSSS jars colonizing that I've not touched or moved a single time, and from what I can see they look phenomenal. No Verm fallen down or anything. Remember that in the future. Less is more. Knock them up and forget about them for 3-4 weeks.
