Best Rewards for a Credit Card?
    #23403830 - 07/02/16 11:28 AM (7 years, 7 months ago)

So in the future, i wanna get a credit card that has those rewards attached to it.

For example, Hawaiian Airlines has a reward credit card that gives u flight miles for using the card.

Anyone have these credit cards? Are the rewards decent or shitty?

Why get locked into airplane tickets?  Go for simple cash back and spend it on whatever you want!

My favorite cards:
  • Citi Double Cash Mastercard: 2% cash back across the board, no limits, no fees, requires good credit to acquire.
  • Citi Costco Visa: 4% cash back on gas, 3% on restaurant/travel, 2% Costco, 1% everything else, no fees (but must be a costco member).
  • Chase Freedom Visa: 5% cash back in rotating quarterly categories, 1% everything else, no fees, $150 bonus cash back after spending $500 during your first 3 months from account opening.

My best rewards card is my Wells Fargo card. Sure, it offers the quarterly categories like the other cards (where you get 5%CB) BUT - every time it hits $25, it applies it to the principal of my mortgage.

If you work the card right, set all your bills you can pay on it - your mortage gets paid quicker. Usually every 2 months it redeems the $25 (or more) credit and applies it to my mortgage. You can knock a year or 2 off easily off your 30 year (and when doing the biweekly payments vs monthly) you'll really be peeling away as much as you can.

I have a couple of credit card accounts open, but the only one I use is my Discover It card.

You get 5% cash back on different categories every quarter. This quarter is for home improvement stores, and thus, totally useless to me, but I'm also getting 2% at all grocery stores and supermarkets, plus 1% on everything else. They've had the same categories since I got the card in 2014, so hopefully they will switch it up next year and introduce other categories. You can use the cash back towards paying off your card balance, or even have it deposited into a checking account. So it really is like cash.

I have accumulated over a hundred bucks so far, which I'm thinking I might put towards a new phone in the fall. I'm still on the iPhone 4s. Maybe I'll get the 7 once it comes out. If I were to use this card to buy it through the Apple store, I get a 5% discount, and on top of that, 5% of the final purchase price credited to my account as cash back. I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

i've had a discover account for going on four years.  same categories each quarter each year, so far.  but most quarters include amazon in addition to the other option (gas, entertainment, grocery, home improvement)

i think discover started offering a 2% cash back card, but that might've been a promo-period that then drops to the 1%.  i've found discover to be very easy as far as increasing credit limits.  that being said, they haven't automatically increased my credit limit without my authorization as some companies do

Well, that is certainly disappointing. So it looks like the only cash back I'll be getting is from groceries (through September, anyway), as I don't shop on Amazon anymore.

Discover raised my credit limit earlier this year, of their own accord, but frankly, I'd prefer a lower interest rate. I thought they would give me a reasonable rate, considering I've always had a very good credit score, but nine. It's pretty high.

have you contacted them about it?  can't hurt trying to negotiate.  also, the interest rate shouldn't matter if you aren't spending money you don't have to spend

maybe there was a reason why my limit was never raised, but they sent me an email requesting action the first time my limit was due for an increase.  since then, i've called them to have it raised every 6-12 months

These are great suggestions.  Personally, I use the Chase Freedom card.

I did note the "fine print" on the first card.  It's 1% on purchases, but in regard to the other 1% on paybacks it says:

"Cash Back on Payments: You will also earn 1% cash back on payments you make that appear on your current month's billing statement as long as the amount paid is at least the Minimum Payment Due that is printed on your billing statement and there is a balance in the Purchase Tracker. The balance in the Purchase Tracker is reduced by eligible payments you make. When the Purchase Tracker reaches $0, you won't earn cash back on payments until more eligible purchases are made."

It kinda sounds like you need to carry some sort of balance to get that second 1%.  Perhaps my read is incorrect. Hypothetically, I think you could pay down to $0.01 each month, but that might be a slight hassle.

dang, good thing u read the fine print: 1% cash back isnt that great.

Thats whats awesome about this: theres so many credit cards out there with their own unqiue reward system. At this point, my credit is awful, but i just aquired a steady job, so i can clear that up pretty soon im hoping.

Go with the Chase Freedom card, 5% cash back on certain quarterly categories, and 1% on all others.

The $150 for first $500 spent in first 3months is also a major plus for me. Plus no yearly fees.

Same for Chase Freedom Unlimited, except it's just 1.5% cash back on everything. $150 bonus for first $500 spent in 3months.

If it's your first card and your credit score isn't great then I'd go for the DiscoverIt card as I hear it's easy to acquire. You get double back your first year so technically Amazon is like 10% off right now.

Actually, apply for DiscoverIt and Chase Freedom at the same time, if you get both then great.

Apply for a creditkarma.com account, it's free and highly informative + updates every 5 days.

Also, Reddit has a great subreddit called churning if you're into looking for ways to earn points.

While the fine print does sound convoluted, in practice, it's legit.  I have my balance set to pay automatically in full right before the due date and have been catching the full 2% reward.

Quote:

What is my Purchase Tracker for my Citi Double Cash Card?
When you make purchases and payments, we add and subtract those dollar amounts respectively from your Purchase Tracker. The amount accumulated in your Purchase Tracker determines the maximum payment amount that can earn cash back each billing cycle. When you make a payment, the Purchase Tracker is reduced by that amount, and the payment earns 1% cash back. When the Purchase Tracker reaches $0, you won't earn cash back on payments until more purchases are made.

For example if your purchases in your Purchase Tracker totals $1,000 and you pay $1,000, you get 1% cash back on that entire $1,000. If you pay $500 you get 1% cash back on the entire $500. If you pay $1,500 (for example, if you had other kinds of charges such as a Balance Transfer on your account) then you will only get 1% cash back on $1,000 of that payment.

Seems like all it does it create needless confusion. :crazy2:
