Alternative substrate for oyster mushroom plug spawn
    #23455818 - 07/19/16 11:01 AM (7 years, 7 months ago)

I made a rookie mistake and bought a bunch of plug spawn without first having logs to inoculate them in. I have some old maple I could soak or some elm I could cut and use on my property however I've read that the logs need to sit for 3-4 weeks beforehand and I'm concerned keeping the plug spawn in my fridge for that much longer... I have a lot of straw and while I recognize this isn't the preferred growing medium, I'm wondering if anyone has had any success with that? Could I treat the plug spawn similarity to grain spawn and grow them that way? Or should I just put them in fresh logs? Or perhaps the spawn will be fine to hang out in the fridge for several more weeks while my logs age?

Thank you in advance!

they should be fine in the fridge for a month or so, as long as they are not really old in the first place. I bought some dowels and they had a use by date 4 months from when I got them.

I could be mistaken but I think spawning to green logs works fine.

Using them on straw could also work but not as efficiently as they are way bigger than sawdust or grain spawn.

Yea, use the trees green. Throw the spawn in the fridge until you cut it down and have time to prep the logs. Id say at least give the logs a few days, maybe a week but some claim the tree can be green. The spawn will be fine in the fridge.
