Is it stupid to enjoy something that might not get you anywhere? * 1
    #23456034 - 07/19/16 12:15 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Hi guys,

I enjoy writing and I'm currently in the climax stage of a novel I'm writing. I find it hard to do the writing...I also have a deep sense of doubt. I feel like it doesn't matter about the writing sometimes because it won't get me anywhere.

Does anyone else enjoy something they think might be a waste although it provides them with great mental pleasure?

I play guitar but that is something I can accept as a persona, non sharing with the world thing.

Peace.

I won't let them push me away

Stephen King spent more than a few years of his life working multiple jobs and struggling to provide for his family on top of writing short stories to sell to magazines for piddly royalty payouts

He never gave up tho and look at him now, probably the most famous horror author in the world

Moral of the story is never give up on your goals no matter how lofty they may seem

I enjoy his works. It gets difficult for me when I type I get a sense of wasting time. This has happened before and I've done bad stuff...like delete stories which I now regret. I have no intention of doing that but I was curious to know if anyone else has these doubts.

Thanks for the response

Terrence McKenna told a story about how he wrote an essay and abstained from weed until the essay was finished.

He finished it and thought he wrote a magnificent essay that was so good and was proud of it.

He immediately began to light up a joint, and after smoking for 10 minutes, he suddenly realized that what he had just wrote was absolute garbage and couldn't believe what he'd just done.

As for me, I try to not spend time on stuff that I might even question its viability. If I start wondering if it's even worth it I usually just stop doing whatever it was.

I've "wasted" 1000s of hours of my life playing online games which yielded me mostly nothing but good times with friends.

"In 1973, King's first novel Carrie was accepted by publishing house Doubleday. King had thrown an early draft of the novel into the trash after becoming discouraged with his progress writing about a teenage girl with psychic powers. His wife retrieved the manuscript and encouraged him to finish it.[21]:54 His advance for Carrie was $2,500; King's paperback rights later earned $400,000."

I feel the same way, its not productive, but if its your passiona and you enjoy it to no end, then why not?

As long u make a living and its not interferring with other aspect like paying bills or spending time with a lover, its not a big deal.

Keep writing OP, your hard work will pay off eventually.

no, it is not stupid.

not everything that is enjoyable has to be productive.

that being said, it is best if one can draw as much pleasure from things that are productive

Writing is one of the hardest fields to get into. Many great works of literature were rejected at first. Just gotta keep on keeping on.

I mean, there's always a risk when you do an art form...

But I'm in the same boat. I'm working on a webcomic right now. I'm putting my heart into it but you know, there's thousands of comics out there, it might well be overlooked. People like my work on Deviant Art but if it doesn't suit their fancy I often get totally ignored ;P

But IDC it's a lot of fun to make so i see it as inherently worthwhile. Never stop, man!!

If everyone in the world didn't do anything they enjoyed or were passionate about because "it might not get them anywhere" then the world might as well not exist.. we could just blow the fucking thing up and be done with it.

Hope that answers your question?

I'm very sceptical about this, the only time I managed to was a few months ago. I didn't have the confidence to send the whole thing so I sent a chapter. My friend said it was good but friends and family will do I guess?

Most people mindlessly watch tv shows or movies daily even though it doesnt get them anywhere and solely because its enjoyable and many other things such as video games or anything else really and theres nothing wrong with or stupid about that, its just fun or enjoyable.

So being creative and using your own mind to make stories just because its enjoyable to you even if it doesmt get you anywhere doesnt sound even slightly dumb to me, and who knows maybe you could get somewhere with it one day.

Everyone on the shroomery should also follow their pleasures, but beware of bad pleasures.

If I did cocaine id consider it a pleasure, but then again writing to me is a drug...I can't get enough sometimes.

I'd say things like video games should definitely be used in strict moderation.

Some sort of passion such as writing, entrepreneurship, etc. should be pursued whole heartedly if it's your life's deepest desire. Follow your purpose!
Perhaps try to decide if it's a hobby or an entrepreneurial venture. Find out where the line is, arrange your life accordingly!

Doing something is already getting you somewhere IMO. Nothing really gets you nowhere in life. We are constantly changing. Gotta look at it different I guess.

I do do loads of things that don't bring me immediate financial profit tho. But it brings me into more realization of who I am.

All I have to do is read the thread title to answer that... You use the word "enjoy" as in it makes you happy, anything that makes you happy is worth perusing. If it gets you nowhere money wise so what? It makes you happy and that's something money can't buy, you're rich with happiness.

Do what makes you happy.

If you said... things like shooting heroin should definitely be used in strict moderation.. I'd be inclined to agree with you... but.... video games? Seriously?

Come at me bro! Gaming since I was 3. 34 now and still going hard. Don't attack my precious video games!!!1111

True, I need to push aside any monetary worries I have. It is a great pleasure writing, it just seems and feels right and it completes me as a human being. I cannot imagine not expressing my mind in these stories.

Holding me at bay
And I don't need your sympathy
To get me through the day
Seasons change and so can I
Hold on boy, no time to cry
Untie these strings, I'm climbing down
I won't let them push me away

I make a lot of hip hop beats. I doubt the probability of "making it" but music is my biggest passion and will forever be my only true escape from reality.

Plus its awesome when you get to surround yourself with and work with other creative people. Just a great feeling altogether.

Peace.

If you enjoy it its taking you somewhere

Something there is mysteriously formed,
Existing before Heaven and Earth,
Silent, still, standing alone, unchanging,
All-pervading, unfailing,
I do not know its name; I call it tao.
If forced to give it a name, I call it
Great (ta). Being great, it flows out;
Flowing out means far-reaching;
Being far-reaching, it is said to return.

It's just a shot away..

Op-
Not at all
As long as it's not regressive (heroin, prostitutes, shoplifting, etc)

We should all strive for maximum net enjoyment. Enjoyment that sustains, and is not fleeting or artificial. If something that might not be productive per se is enjoyable to you, than more power to ya.

Just an update. I sent 2 short stories off for feedback to a magazine for possible publication as well. I'm more interested in getting my work out there so others can judge it and enjoy it.

I haven't heard back yet but it took a lot of fussing to work past the inner critic and do it.
