Is it stupid to enjoy something that might not get you anywhere? 1

Hi guys,
I enjoy writing and I'm currently in the climax stage of a novel I'm writing. I find it hard to do the writing...I also have a deep sense of doubt. I feel like it doesn't matter about the writing sometimes because it won't get me anywhere.
Does anyone else enjoy something they think might be a waste although it provides them with great mental pleasure?
I play guitar but that is something I can accept as a persona, non sharing with the world thing.
Peace.

Stephen King spent more than a few years of his life working multiple jobs and struggling to provide for his family on top of writing short stories to sell to magazines for piddly royalty payouts
He never gave up tho and look at him now, probably the most famous horror author in the world
Moral of the story is never give up on your goals no matter how lofty they may seem

I enjoy his works. It gets difficult for me when I type I get a sense of wasting time. This has happened before and I've done bad stuff...like delete stories which I now regret. I have no intention of doing that but I was curious to know if anyone else has these doubts.
Thanks for the response

Terrence McKenna told a story about how he wrote an essay and abstained from weed until the essay was finished.
He finished it and thought he wrote a magnificent essay that was so good and was proud of it.
He immediately began to light up a joint, and after smoking for 10 minutes, he suddenly realized that what he had just wrote was absolute garbage and couldn't believe what he'd just done.
As for me, I try to not spend time on stuff that I might even question its viability. If I start wondering if it's even worth it I usually just stop doing whatever it was.
I've "wasted" 1000s of hours of my life playing online games which yielded me mostly nothing but good times with friends.

"In 1973, King's first novel Carrie was accepted by publishing house Doubleday. King had thrown an early draft of the novel into the trash after becoming discouraged with his progress writing about a teenage girl with psychic powers. His wife retrieved the manuscript and encouraged him to finish it.[21]:54 His advance for Carrie was $2,500; King's paperback rights later earned $400,000."

I feel the same way, its not productive, but if its your passiona and you enjoy it to no end, then why not?
As long u make a living and its not interferring with other aspect like paying bills or spending time with a lover, its not a big deal.
Keep writing OP, your hard work will pay off eventually.

no, it is not stupid.
not everything that is enjoyable has to be productive.
that being said, it is best if one can draw as much pleasure from things that are productive

Writing is one of the hardest fields to get into. Many great works of literature were rejected at first. Just gotta keep on keeping on.

I mean, there's always a risk when you do an art form...
But I'm in the same boat. I'm working on a webcomic right now. I'm putting my heart into it but you know, there's thousands of comics out there, it might well be overlooked. People like my work on Deviant Art but if it doesn't suit their fancy I often get totally ignored ;P
But IDC it's a lot of fun to make so i see it as inherently worthwhile. Never stop, man!!

Fantastic and motivational responses from everyone! For the sake of myself I'll keep at it, and like someone said, I will 'write the shit out of it'.

If everyone in the world didn't do anything they enjoyed or were passionate about because "it might not get them anywhere" then the world might as well not exist.. we could just blow the fucking thing up and be done with it.
Hope that answers your question?

I'm very sceptical about this, the only time I managed to was a few months ago. I didn't have the confidence to send the whole thing so I sent a chapter. My friend said it was good but friends and family will do I guess?

if ur hella persistent it might get published. I remember in elementary school there was this children frogs books about these two frog guys and the teacher said the guy who wrote these books was trying to get them published for hella numerous years and no one would publish it but then finally someone did and he got rich off it.

Most people mindlessly watch tv shows or movies daily even though it doesnt get them anywhere and solely because its enjoyable and many other things such as video games or anything else really and theres nothing wrong with or stupid about that, its just fun or enjoyable.
So being creative and using your own mind to make stories just because its enjoyable to you even if it doesmt get you anywhere doesnt sound even slightly dumb to me, and who knows maybe you could get somewhere with it one day.
