maybe its because i like to keep up on breaking news and current events, but it seems like 2016 has just been a shitty year.
Celebrity deaths, terrorist attacks/police killings seemingly atleast once or twice a week.
Part of me just wants to un plug and tune it all out for the rest of the year and get lost in a hobby or a video game or something.

Yep. I just saw a headline saying our new and not-voted in Prime Minister would be 'ready to push the button' on a nuclear bombing which could potentially kill 100,000.
Facepalm. Fucking morons.

no, lighting, like volunteering for local theater lighting.
Ive worked events and concerts setting up for lighting, but i need more experience behind the board to get a real job. Also building cool leds in my garage, and setting up lights in my garage to control with my pc, a raspberry pi or a dmx control board if i can afford one to practice programming lights.

My hobby is watching the world burn. it's been a good week.
It's not like i wish for bad things to happen but when it does, the ensuing shit fest that is logic vs. PC is Grade A entertainment.
Also watching War in real time is a pretty new phenomena for me.

That's the news and recent events for yu, turning the world into a media obsessed zombfest which then eats it's own brains as the result of cellphone overload. Bang.

I noticed as I was on the way to work, for the first time yesterday, an ENTIRE busy street in London in the evening staring at their phones. There's always a % of people these days, but never before have I witnessed an entire street doing it. On a beautiful summers evening no less. Fucking surreal.
If someone out there has the firm intention of keeping us all distracted, they're doing a fucking fine job of it.

I understand her frustration, if it doesn't affect you in any way other than instilling fear then it will deteriorate your health and mental stability.
I want to walk down a city street and not worry about being 'blown up', so I do. But when someone mentions an attack I automatically feel betrayed by their own fear.

Fuck the election. Fuck this country. Fuck all this race war shit. Fuck the way we all turn into a bunch of belligerent asswipes every year we have to vote for a puppet in chief. I hate everything.

It amazes me just how many people are worried they'll be blown up over here just by getting on public transport. I hear people talk of this worry often. The propaganda machine is in full effect and working well.
I've always had this feeling of how statistically unlikely it would be for me to be killed by a terrorist. So while I was on the phone with my cousin this weekend we tried to figure it out:
Turns out 94 people in the US have been killed by terrorists since 9/11 (Source)
Since that time, going on average deaths per year in the US (2,596,993), roughly 38,954,895 people have died. That means you're 414,413 times more likely to be killed by anything BUT terrorists.
I mean really - you've got a better chance of winning the lottery or being struck by lightning or being hit by a bus whilst crossing the road. Yet I don't hear people fearful of those things. It's ridiculous how much of a frenzy of fear they have people worked up to right now.

European stats were harder to find and I didn't wanna dedicate much time to looking into it as was mid conversation.
I mean we had the 7/7 thing in the UK; 56 people were blown up then. But that was 9 years ago and since then nothing. Yet people are still utterly terrified.
I do think their fears are unfounded in reality. But they are well founded in the media (which is just propaganda, after all).

Terrorism is calculated to provoke an irrational reaction, a reaction counter to the rational self interest. Rational self interest wouldn't register terrorism as so much as a blip on the radar, but these attacks are meant to rattle us and divert our rational minds.

I don't honestly know, but I'm a little surprised you don't get the reference. Like 10 years ago, some sad sack British kid used to post in OTD, I forget the names of the several accounts he used. He once started a thread talking about his hobbies, and one of them was "collecting chainsaws". Everyone in there found it hilarious and it became a running inside joke amongst otd'ers for a while. For some reason it popped into my head when I saw CA ask him about hobbies.

It's astoundingly prevalent around cities, and I also hear it coming from country people who are furthest away from any danger.
Your right, people die from other causes. Look at the biggest modern day killer : heart disease. So, would I be wrong to say this, the fear instilled in people by the media creates national increase in stress and anxiety which lead to heart disease. Thus creating long term customers for pharmacy companies, long term employment for doctors, and population decrease due to deaths.
Respect this idea for it is very possible.

Do you think just following all of the calamities of the world WITHOUT using mainstream media(its an outdated source anyway) still has a negative effect on your heart?
i don't feel fear or anxiety from war/terrorist vids and can even goes as far as saying i derive pleasure from following world events in real time. i just find it captivating to live vicariously through others from the safety of my home.

He once started a thread talking about his hobbies, and one of them was "collecting chainsaws". Everyone in there found it hilarious and it became a running inside joke amongst otd'ers for a while. For some reason it popped into my head when I saw CA ask him about hobbies.
that event i do not recall

Maybe it won't if you enjoy it and can put any fear or doubts aside. But if you found out there was a flu pandemic or some new virus on the run, then I'm confident you would feel afraid. Which in turn lowers your immune system defense due to stress and bingo, you catch it and possibly die. If you maintain a strong outlook and live healthy etc then you are doing yourself a big favour.

in the US there is a "pandemic" every 2-3 years
swine flu, bird flu, zikka
there was mass fear when ebola hit, even though it never actually made it to the USA

Just wait till something like the Spanish flu of 1918 hits...
This pandemic has been described as "the greatest medical holocaust in history" and may have killed more people than the Black Death. It is said that this flu killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century.

What kind of hobby? Shooting firearms?

The answer is to not watch the news. A multi-headed network that promotes pessimism to try and propagate sensationalism and therefore get more viewers.
If there's one thing my family and those I consider friends all have in common it's that we strongly reject news stations.
You can be informed without watching the news. Pick a topic that interests you, read about it across multiple networks to get current information.
Most news is overblown anyway. The whole Trayvon Martin thing is a perfect example of negative sensationalism.

A few months ago I decided to completely tune out and stop exposing myself to any news whatsoever.
I absolutely unplugged and stopped paying any attention to world events.
I have no idea what has been going on.
This has been the best thing for my mental health and emotional wellbeing and I truly wish I had done this years and years ago.
Reading scary and upsetting news was a huge factor in anxiety and depression I felt before and i feel huge benefits from detoxing from bad news , doom and gloom.
All that being aware of the endless horror stories ever did was reduce my quality of life and trouble my soul.
Now I focus all my attention on my passions and hobbies .
I highly recommend other people try the media detox as well.
The news is toxic and it really was making me sick .

I really don't think so.
I mean didn't they push a flu pandemic a few years ago? all it made me think was that being an introvert is gonna finally pay off.

Glad so many of you good people have come to the same conclusion as I about the news, that it's just another arm of the propaganda machine designed to keep us afraid and vulnerable and to keep the people in power where they're at. The news is far from an accurate reflection of the current state of affairs.
Don't watch it. Little good will come of it.

I'm glad your another person who can shrug this fear off. I should have said, 'I am confident people will feel afraid.'
You might not be worried but the millions who get lost in the news will be scared and weak and vulnerable. Take old folks, they aren't too tech savvy most of the time so will stick to the tv for news, old people who are frightened will die because of stress.

About what? I don't know what goes on behind the public eye, I don't work or know of the operations of intelligent agencies, pharma companies or health organisations or food distributors or farmers.
I came to my conclusions based on the fact that most old folk believe what they are told by the news, thus allowing them to be easily controlled by fear which really does affect everyone's health and well being.
I'd like to see someone stand up against it...oh wait people try and then magically have accidents. Try exposing the oil industry and the food companies and banks, you won't get far because they don't give a **** about anyone.
