Figuring Spawn to Substrate Ratio rule of thumb
    #23455581 - 07/19/16 09:58 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Ok, so I've been trying to search many threads regarding this question but there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer in sight. I've looked at different calculators and all and the reason I'm asking this question is because a lot of the calculators leave the ratio choice up to you. I read that larger ratios take longer but prevent more contamination if I'm not mistaken? If anyone can link me to some clear and concise threads that answer my question as well, that will also be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Less will take less time to colonize, lessening the odds of cotams due to mycelium taking over everything quickly.

If I'm not mistaken.

I do 1:3. Got a tub going now that's 1:4 seems to be doing fine

You're not mistaken, but with good spawn the time it takes to colonize a 1:4 vs 1:2 is like a couple days difference.

Less takes less time to colonize? What??
How does that work? I figured more spawn would mean more inoculation points which means faster colonization?

edit: nevermind, I realize you meant less RATIO and not less spawn. My bad.

How to get started in bulk:
Presto 23-Quart Pressure Cooker
BOD's Simple as FUCK Still Air Box
PastyWhyte's Easy Agar Tek
Munchauzen's Cultivation Video Series
How EvilMushroom666 Prepares His Grains (I use jars with Synthetic Filter Discs)
What is G2G? (Grain-to-Grain)
Damion5050's Coir Tek (I use 5.5 - 6 quarts of water instead of 4. Also ignore step 13 and ignore the monotub completely. The only purpose of this tek is to show you how to make a simple substrate. I also add gypsum to it but not necessary)
Spitball's Monotub Tek (A liner isn't necessary but is useful)
Use 6500k lights throughout the whole process. When you wake up, turn the light on. When you go to sleep turn the light off. It's as simple as that.

There's no perfect ratio.  I go high sub ratio with very clean/aggressive spawn and less for the opposite.

My APE tub is 1:8 and fully colonized by day 8-9

My PESA mycobags were 1:6 and took a little longer. Less water, GE and more nutrition but also self-contained and pasteurized poo

Straight cased grains work well too.
