What is this?

Can anyone please explain what's happening? Does it need to be tossed? What happens if one of these fruits gets eaten?

Trichoderma forest green mold

Trich is a mycophage mold, or fungi eating mold

P. cubensis mycelium normally dies in their presence, and trichoderma is characterized by rough textured, bright white mycelium in the unsporulated state, later turning green when spores develop

The fruits are probably fine to eat. Trichoderma is known to be absent of mycotoxins (http://www.wwpa.org/Portals/9/docs/PDF/TG2.pdf). These molds occur in natural levels in outdoor soils and pose no major threat to human health unlike black molds like asperigillus niger which can release toxins into the mycelium. Forest green molds do not release mycotoxins into the mycelium, but rather colonize it through and eat it up

The fruits are probably safe. If you would like to be extra safe, dry the fruits out before use. If they taste bad, reject them. I've eaten several fruits from triched subs, no effect or difference i noticed vs normal fruits. Normally the mushroom fruit is sterile and free of toxins, unless invaded by mycotoxic mold genus' like Aspergillus, Fusarium, Stachybotrys, etc

The cake needs to be tossed asap, and the fruits need to be harvested before the mold mycelium gets to them. The cake has to be tossed because it is a mold-spore bomb, and the spores will get all over your growing area. Best thing to do, to prevent the spores from spreading everywhere as you remove it, is to bring a plastic bag to the fruiting chamber, bag it up on the spot, and carry it outside. If you dont bag it up, it will rain spores on your way to the door.

Don't lose heart, everyone on this forum has gotten trich sooner or later lol, always a learning process

Cheers and good luck

There's a chance it could be either aspergillus or penicillium, both have species that can be forest green, and look just like trich. All 3 of them have species that produce mycotoxins, so to say trichoderma doesn't produce mycotoxins is a straight lie.

Quote:

Satratoxin F,G,H is a macrocyclic tricothecene produced by Stachybotrys chartarum, Trichoderma viridi and other fungi. High doses or chronic low doses are lethal. This toxin is abortogenic in animals and is believed to alter immune system function and makes affected individuals more susceptible to opportunistic infection.

Another mycotoxin, Trichodermin mycotoxin comes from Trichoderma viridi

As long as op is healthy and has a decent immune system, he doesn't need to worry about molds with mycotoxins. Unfortunately, if he has cancer or aids, I wouldn't trust ANY molds. People with compromised immune systems shouldn't even grow IMO. Hell they can't even go for a walk in a forest. Regularly though, you'll be fine.
