Southeast US Identification Request - Possible cubes and ???
    #23447052 - 07/16/16 02:54 PM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Pasture, cattle, very hot, little rain in the last 72 hours, all mushies found around cow patties

Cubes? - These look and feel very similar to other cubes from the same area, stem bruises blue, spore prints already on caps (working on spore prints from a few of the "healthiest" caps below) were purpleish, bottom of stem where cut bruised blue, dark veils, gills look purplish/black

the larger caps showed small spots of what looks like mold, please let me know if i should throw these (or any others not worth keeping :super:)

Some patties not attached to the ground with intact cube(s) and mycelium, i've got them in a tub with a few sprinkles of distilled water and the lid on and cracked. not sure if this is the best place to ask, but is there a worthwhile chance of these flushing again?

questionable

The caps were much lighter weight than the cubes, the stem is very prone to snapping, after they'd sat for a bit and I went to photograph them, the caps were much "mushier" and even moreso after setting before drying. not being sure what these are, i have them setting on a paper towel in a cabinet, instead of in with the likely cubes. i kept them in the same bag while hunting, was this a bad idea? does it mean my spore prints (of the cubes, by the time i was ready to spore print the questionable caps, they'd become too fragile to try) might be contaminated, also??

Thanks in advance!! :hahyeahwoo:

That's a huge load of pictures!

Nice cubes, and the second lot looks like a heap of Panaeolus cyanescens perhaps mixed
with Panaeolus antillarum (those that by chance don't bruise blue).

Cubes

And what he said above about the Pan. Cyans. Just pick them them, the cyans will bruise, the rest won't.

Yeah, it was more work and took longer, but I tried to get a pic of each mushie in in it's natural habitat before picking. They are so pretty and the extra time taking photos is improving their quality

Thank you both for the ID.

I have a couple more questions,

On the two largest cubes' gills, there are a few light blue spots, is this mold and throw them away or the gills are bruising blue?

Also, the pans seemed very saturated and after sitting overnight the stem of one had tiny maggots/larvae crawling out of it so I tossed the bunch to be safe. Are there any special precautions I can take to to avoid this happening again?

Probably just bruising - you'll recognise mold when you see it.

You don't need to throw away mushrooms because of the maggots, they're not dangerous to consume although maybe
a bit unappetizing to some.  They usually crawl out as the mushrooms dry, anyway. You can also do them in by putting
your infested mushrooms in a cup or whatever, blow some unhealthy puffs of cigarette smoke down into it and cover
for a few minutes. You can be sure they won't survive it.
