My garden; welcome to the jungle 3

Hey folks,
I'm enjoying reading this an other boards, seeing all your plants sprouting, growing, blooming and having crazy adventures.
I thought it'd be fun to show you my new green friends here. Some are store bought and some i germinated from seed.
I'm working to grow the following collection of plants.
Actinidia kolomikta (cat lure) Buddleia davidii (butterfly lure) Chamaemelum nobile (herb) Clematis montana (fragrant) Datura wrightii (fragrant) Echinopsis pachanoi (mescaline) Ephedra sinica (ephedrine) Fragaria vesca (yummy strawberries) Glechoma hederacea (herb) Ipomoea alba (fragrant) Ipomoea tricolor (lsa) Jasminum officinale (fragrant) Lonicera periclymemum (fragrant) Lonicera tatarica (cat lure) Mentha requienii (herb) Mentha spicata (herb) Peganum harmala (harmaline) Phalaris arundinacea (DMT related) Rosmarinus officinalis (herb) Thymus citriodorus (herb) Thymus praecox (herb) Thymus pseudolanuginosus (herb) Trachelospermum jasminoides (fragrant)
I'm planning to take pictures every week from today on, i'll show you what i have captured thus far starting from A to Z.
Actinida kolomikta
This can has kiwi's when a mate is near, but i planted it cause i've read it attracts cats and i also think the pink leaf variegation it will grow is really pretty.
I bought this online and it got delivered like this on april 11

July 12 and some pink is starting to show

And this is how it looks on July 17

Buddleia davidii
For that real summer feeling butterflies are essential, therefore i got me this butterfly bush. I got this from a cutting in spring, and the color will be a ruby like red.

10 days later, it's chillaxing against the wall on a hot afternoon.

Chamaemelum nobile
Cause i'm lazy and don't wanna mow the lawn i figured i use herbs as ground cover. For one is roman chamomile non flowering 'Treneague' cultivar.
It releases the scent of apples when you roll around in it.

Initially these were 12 bought plants and i made around 50 of them in spring. This is about half of it showing.

Clematis montana
This variety is called 'Fragrant spring' and will render pink flowers next year. This is how i got it.

And currently.

Datura wrightii
No pictures yet! This is still on my wishlist. I had doubts earlier to plant a datura but right now i can't wait to get my hands on some of these wrightii seeds. This variant i think is the prettiest with the bigger flowers and rounded leaves and i heard their smell is great.
Echinopsis pachanoi
Welcome home green fella.

Happy cactus.

Ready for liftoff

On day 8 after sowing this little guy poked his head up to see what's up.

Pachanoi x tomato

17 days old now and they are starting to grow what seems to be their feeling antennae

Ephedra sinica
Nothing came up after 2 weeks, so into the fridge! (will keep them there for a week)

Fragaria vesca
Also for groundcover but ofcourse for the tasty berries...

More strawberries.

I'm afraid though i will at some point have to make all these into compost because they run around pretty wild and feeling up plants way smaller than them..
Glechoma hederacea
Also known as ground ivy, this wonderfull creeping herb has a terrific aroma when you crush it's leaves. It blooms with nice purple flowers.
I bought 9 of these, and they have been struggling since day 1.

I will make cuttings soon and plant those in a more suitable area with some shade.
Ipomoea alba
This moonflower vine will open it's big white flowers and release it's scent when the sun sets.
Here they are sprouting, i didn't expect the seedlings to be so massive and they had a pretty hard time pushing out an inch of soil from the containers made from them.

The second mistake i made is leaving the cardboard containers on them when outplanting, even though theres no bottom to it.
Most of the plants turned out like this.

Just a few had the container falling off out of itself, and this is the result

Ipomoea tricolor
Failing to find an LSD plant i settled with morning glories for the LSA.

Unfortunately, snails apparently love too get high too and they ate every single one of the seedlings
Jasminum officinale
I had 2 free spots that gave other plants (confederate jasmine) a hard time on their roots, so im trying this one to see if it does better, and maybe even smell better too.
They look a bit yellowish but that's cause the nursery sent me the variegated cultivar..

Lonicera periclymemum
I love the smell and taste of honeysuckle. First i bought an orange blooming variety, x tellmaniana. I turned it into mulch after finding out it's non-fragrant

Here are the replacements (have had just one flower on the tall one, but next year they should be pretty intense)

Lonicera tatarica
Some cats are supposed to like this plant. Has no fragrance. This is 3 months growth.

Mentha requienii
Cute little plant with an intense peppermint smell. I got these last week.

Mentha spicata
I really love the smell and flavor of this mint, makes awesome tea. Got a bush of it from the supermarket for 50 cents and just added some soil and water.

Peganum harmala
These syrian rue seeds germinated nicely, had to thin out the containers quite a bit.

They love to sunbathe.

The last one looks a bit different then the others but that's ok i guess.
Phalaris arundinacea
Will check out what type of DMT is in this soothing green grass when it reaches around 6 feet in height.
This is the 2 week progress so far..

Rosmarinus officinalis
They sent me the crawling prostrate variety. I looked as confused as it does. Smell is good though.

Thymus citriodorus
Another lovely smelling ground cover (one day...) plant. Not really fond of the variegated version that was mixed in with the order, it may just end up missing...

Thymus praecox
The 'alba' version. Not as slow as the the T. citriodorus but still rather slow spreading. It's herbalicious though, and the bees also love it.

Thymus pseudolanuginosus
aka woolly thyme. superb fragrance, amazing looks and grows pretty decent as well.

Trachelospermum jasminoides
Smells a bit like honeysuckle to me, not as sweet but still pleasant. I have moved these plants from where i initially put them in the ground cause they started to act a bit strange. (looked like some roots rotting...)

And at their new spot.

So now i have introduced you to my friends, i will keep this thread updated. Atleast the weather looks promising, there has been this huge orange ball in the sky all day sending out tons of light and warmth!

Some updates from my garden.
It is now certain that cats love the Actinidia kolomikta...to pee on!

The pink buds just contained regular green leaves, the cat piss however created a nice variegation.
Butterfly bush in bloom.

Pachanoi babies keep getting bigger. And even 2 more sprouted after 23 days (17 out of 21 now). Root upgrades are getting ready..

Trying to keep the creeping charlie alive...i replanted them to a more shaded place, rooted some cuttings from one, and also made some new guerilla cuttings in the city.

The one moonflower has reached it maximum height. I wonder if those buds are gonne be flowers.

The honeysuckle is still on it's way to the top. This fly is looking like it's just sitting there but it was actually sliding down the vine.

The syrian rue keeps growing. One seedling could be another plant, perhaps something rare and elusive.

More happened ofcourse, but these were the highlights of the week.

Where did you aquired your seeds, mine were of well known 'seeds of the gods' brand. I dug em up yesterday and they seemed to be rotten brown and dried out on the inside. Except for one, but i guess that was my lesson in patience for next year

UK Company i cant remember the name ill find out when i get home from what I've read you don't bury them push them point down into growing medium leaving the top exposed or you scatter them and cover with cling film and they take a couple weeks to germinate

Weekly highlights:
I noticed the last missing seedling today (1st pic blurry in the foreground) making the germination rate 100%
Looking for new growth after having introduced some worms to the soil

Strawberry plants for the neighbour rooting. One needed a bit of support after having it's umbilical cord cut

Ground ivy waiting to be outplanted this week. This is a bit of a dangerous spot concerning slugs, so that's why i decided to hire night time security.

Lonicera can't stop, won't stop.

Corsican mint starting to look like a plus instead of a square, and the spearmint got a first flower.

Syrian rue and phalaris grass looking pretty

Thyme exploding with the flowering season done.

Some updates to my garden
Starting with A i sowed Argyreia nervosa seeds after a 24 hour soak. These will be my new source of LSA with the morning glories babies having been eaten earlier this summer.

At some point i will add Turbina corymbosa to the mix, this will be epic
Buddleia davidii and Lonicera tatarica got haircuts. I want them to be a bit more bushy.

Clematis and chamomile cuttings rooting and moonflower layering.

35 days after sowing yet another baby pachanoi hatched. Germination rate has now surpassed 100%.

Found a new source for Ephedra sinica seed. Half of them went to stratify the other half went straight into soil. After just 2 days one of the seeds stuck out his tongue and started licking the dirt, needless to say it died shortly after.

Some more seeds planted from left to right Artemisia absinthium and Tanacetum parthenium (1st pic), Lophophora williamsii and Sceletium tortuosum

Even more, these are seeds planted from fruit i enjoyed eating. Cause my earlier mystery seedling died cause a lack in acrobatic skills, i tought i'd make this my new mystery seedling. If anyone were to ever guess what this is a nice assortment of ethnobotanical seed will be your reward.

The Pereskiopsis porteri cuttings have rooted, i will let them grow an inch or two longer before they'll get pedro hats. Side branches were relocated to seperate containers.

It's hard to believe it has only been a week! A lot of news from my private jungle..
First off, the kiwi vine grew a new piece of trellis! Amazing...

I had a few plants gifted to me by a neighbour, the bigger one is an Aquilegia (columbine) and the others are Alchemilla (lady's mantle). Neither of them are psychoactive. Have planted them in pots to see if they turn out pretty.

4 out of 10 Hawaiian baby woodrose seeds sprouted. Possibly have nicked the others too hard

These pictures were taken before they passed out from the heat of the sun. They revived quickly in a more shaded spot.
Some other things that sprouted from left to right, top to bottom; absinthium, ephedra, pretty little perfect sphere and sceletium

Looking at the growth progression of trichanosaurus pachanoi...rather shocked by the looks of the top having been gnawed on. The second picture shows a litte bit of snail trail, the wooden lid must have lured them in. Can hardly blame the evil beast cause the top of that cactus looks amazingly juicy..

An update on the pachanoi babies, 5 weeks old now Interesting in these pictures is to see how they use auxins for camouflage to blend in with the surroundings. Some of them pick the reddish brown of the soil while others try to mix in with the green of the algae, a very smart plant.

Honeysuckle flowering. The number of flowers have increased ten fold since it flowering earlier this year (1st pic)

Finally the spearmint started spreading. The word 'ominous' is i think what describes these pictures best. The mint plant in the last picture almost looks like it is emerging from the ground and going to make a dash to some neighbour's backyard

Grass jungle, indoor rue sheltering from the rain, outdoor cuttings toughening up and a month of growth

So they say. For as much as chamomile is touted as being the best for all sorts of ailments i javent felt shit when i drank it. Hell i would need and elephant tranquilizer to bring this bull down. Or my favoritw dose of 5mg of melatonin andand 25mg diphenhydramine. Its the best.

Snap, how did you chill them, in soil? And how long have they been out since?
I've seen activity from about 20% of my unchilled seeds now. Other half will stay fridged another week.

Weekly update:
Some true leafs are appearing on seedlings; Artemisia (they smell good when crushed), HBWR, Ephedra and prepped up kanna.

Planted two new species, Crocus sativus (saffron) and Satureja montana (winter savory). Winter savory starting to sprout already after 3 days. The croci should appear and flower in about a month or two.

A set of Pereskinopsis.

The water bottle is just for decoration...you can't see it on this picture but it got ventilation holes on the bottom so moist air can escape..
The one moonflower vine turned out not to be a moonflower vine but Fallopia convolvulus instead. Nice move, black-bindweed...
I'm trying to root some cuttings of what was left behind cause in the current state they will probably not survive the winter nor flower and send new seed.

To finish, some repotted Peganum

And week old solo loph getting huge! He is gonna need the whole pot anyway..

So jealous of the ephedra what was your process. I've followed literally every instruction I can find online and the seller of the seeds and only had one sprout out a little then immediately die. Did you bury them poke them pointy end down scatter them? What substrate when Watering any nutes any pH modifications? I've tried each of these with no success

Edit: Now that i think of it i only got 2 plants out of 50 seeds thus far, so this might actually be the way not to do it!
Some possible factors:
- The seeds might have been fresh (a different species seeds from the same supplier (weberseeds.nl) where noticably fresh)
- I sprinkled cinnamon after the first seed went full retard. (cinnamon is a good fungicide, not sure if works against what is at play here but can't beat the smell anyway)
- Orientation of the seed. I threw out some that went roots up to the sky, however i think i pretty much layed em all down flat and sprinkled just a tiny bit of dirt not even covering them...
Watering and shaking could also have effected the position afterwards ofcourse.
I ended up removing the seed cage from both specimens manually wich seemed to be beneficial, they were already growing though with it on the tips of their cotyledons.

Work in progress;
Actinidia kolomikta (kiwi vine)
2 weeks growth

Alchemilla (lady's mantle)
Having a good time

Aquilegia (columbine)
It did lose a substantial amount of leaves but it seems to be growing new ones. Bugs are turning to cannibalism

Argyreia nervosa (hawaiian baby woodrose)
I have repotted them. These plants seem to have a thing with roots

Artemisia abisnthium (wormwood) and Satureja montana (winter savory)
Repotted and placed outside on their spot to overwinter. Will place these in the ground coming spring when they are big enough not to get trampled easily.

Echinopsis pachanoi (san pedro)
Pretty cactus It has gotten really fat since it was freed from it's tiny little pot, compare the countours of the ribs..

Ephedra sinica (ma huang)
These 2 plants seem to do really fine. They are the only 2 out of 50 seeds that made it. Their batch mates got hairy. Cold moist stratification has in my case lowered the success rate by 200% to 0. Looks to me it was a bacterial or fungal thing...judging from browning and squishiness.

Glechoma hederacea (ground ivy)
Looks like it is finally getting some foothold

Ipomoea alba (moonflower vine)
Root fuzz after 2 weeks

Jasminum officinale (jasmine)
A month later

Mystery seeds (???)
Repotted the seeds. Had to check what was happening with them and one of them did show activity, didn't even expect the seeds to be viable. I broke it up for inspection (it's a type of seed with multiple plants growing from it) and repotted in fresh soil. Not sure if breaking it up is any good but time will tell...

Lophophora williamsii (peyote)
This image is not altered in any way. 2 week old baby loph

Mentha requienii (corsican mint)
Month of mint

Peganum harmala (syrian rue)
Recovering nicely after beeing treated terrible. Even though they seem pretty tough, i will keep them inside untill spring when they will be planted in the ground.

Sceletium tortuosum (kanna)
Unsupported now and doing great (except one, but that was my bad )

Thymus pseudolanuginosus (wooly thyme) and T. citriodorus (lemon thyme)
Second try of cuttings, this thyme in water

Small update.
To start with 2 plants that ended up as a gift, i only realized they were annuals after i already got em. Matricaria chamomilla, nitrogen fixers.

Lavendula angustifolia, not sure why this wasn't in my garden yet....smells great.

Then there was also this other great news, the graft took! (my first one ever, the joy..) Looked at first like it was shriveling up like a raisin, then few days later...

His brother graft seemed to have made a good connection too, just wanted to know how it felt like... I made a couple more grafts and repotted the remaining seedlings for gifts and controls

Thats all for this week!

Seed fairy brought me some Erythroxylum coca var. coca

Aquired this boerhavia diffusa or red spiderling or tarvine, or whatever wikipedia says you call it.

Pach graft just exploding, blending in with the peres, in the background 20 liter pot for HBWR B)

In the background big ol pach growing higher

And in the background, a wild Osmanthus appears. Not the fragrans on my wishlist but a burkwoodii, a mix between delavyi and decorus. Will see how good it is coming spring.

No average temps but I took one plant out of grow room to get some natural sun light as it was flowering and they die in the grow room really quick for some reason, so I thought it would be kinder on the flowers and the whole damn plant died and it was the middle of British summer time which was quite hot this year. Could be from the temp change as I've read they really hate it. Still got 4 left though all flowering their little hearts out.

Plant growth has slowed down considerably with the sun setting early and temperatures dipping below zero outside..
Kiwi, Jasmine and HBWR. They all have some sort of chlorosis going on it seems like. Perhaps some just be dropping leaves..

Some more autumn sun bathing (savory, wormwood, tar vine and lavender)

Saffron update

Seems like this moonflower specimen will make it through the winter

Ground Ivy patch after weeding

Peres getting so tall...

To prevent it from growing through the roof i will graft a pachanoi onto it.

Some pachs that like to grow

Ephedra sinica layering

Kanna update

Other herbs update

Not that hard if you can cover a bulb with some dirt you should be able to do it
Just had a couple of flowers yet, like 5 from 16 bulbs. Plucked the red thingies off them and left em to dry somewhere

Don't have any information about it. I got it from a place that sells a lot of cacti and provides lots of info but the genetics of this specimen weren't clearly specified. Besides that it's a cutting of Trichocereus pachanoi from south america with the highest mescaline content.

Not really, it's 2016. I ordered prions with a custom sequence spliced into them from a chinese company.
Could perhaps call this gene graft tek? Only problem is i left some residue in my watering can and now my tomato plant is producing dragon fruit.

About one week later...
The Actinidia kolomikta is dropping leaves, beginning to look more like the twig i bought it as. As a twig it has grown immensely.

Ipomoea alba outside, now in winter colors. Still got 2 green ones indoor.

Jasminum officinale, wtf. It's sibling be OK...so i'm thinking to myself what can be the cause of this, is it trying to tell me something?

Then finally the pieces of the puzzle fell together...it's message must be 'lemon'. All this time been giving my plants the wrong taste of water (blueberry). Didn't have any lemon juice at hand but i figured battery acid has the same zing.

Crocus aftermath. Have collected strands from a total of around 10 flowers out of 16 planted bulbs, perhaps next year the will flower more abundant.

Argyreia nervosa foot long leaf, and this interesting white seedling hiding under it (after 3 months)

Erythroxylum coca var. coca not in a rush

Ephedra cutting seems to have made it

Trying to get the Sceletium pot a little more filled up too

Preperations of a miniature Pereskopsis forest

Checking if my pach still there, yep still there

My jasmine plant also acts weird sometimes, especially in this desert heat.
It sometimes looses most of its leaves, but then revive as soon as it cools down abit, same goes with my fig tree.

They do drop all their leafs once they get older 2-3 years but they have little green spikey leaf sticking out I can't remember what the word is decidious?? Something like that.

Man I got some novo berries from someone in the MP, the bag inside the package was opened and a few of them dried out, one sprouted and died. I may try again when I feel like waisting some money.

The berries need planting asap. Next time tell the guy to plant the berries in the container he ships them to you in. That way you get a head start on the germination and they are protected from drying out. My guy sends me them in sealed disposable plastic test tubes filled with growing substrate. 9 times out of 10 they have sprouted by the time they get to me.

That's smart. He had them in a baggie of peat, but it wasn't sealed good and the peat dried out, and a few rolled out into the envolope and dried told him about it and he never msgd me back, definitely doing another source next time.

I had read to treat these cuttings somewhat like cactusses to have success
It worked on a batch i did, they all took. Another try and got mixed results

Gave the left side slightly more water, right side only barely moist. Few days later left side almost completely wilted whit soil still moist, right side all took with soil going dry before i moistured again

Clematis montana twig from last spring (first pic)

Kiwi

Acclimatizing

Ipomoea alba flowers

This Artemisia absinthium was keeping pedro spot warm, moved it underneath honeysuckle

And pedro back outside, sacred datura planted around it
Crawling rosemary didn't survive the winter (good riddance), apparently that cultivar is slightly less hardy then it's regular counterpart that i planted 2 of

Pachycereus pringlei and Coryphantha maiz-tablasensis

If your username reflects your tendency of sniffing out flowers i could see this beeing a problem
Didn't notice anything yet tho (had about 10 sniffs), besides the dog talking in a french accent, that was kinda weird..since i don't even have a dog Just kidding but yea i kinda missed the scent i heard people talk about.. Something very faint...gonna try again later tonight

Had some nice weather so here's an update.
Kanna. Almost a year ago, first try of cuttings in the pot with original 2 plants

Currently, after harvesting 150 grams of fresh material. First two pictures is one of the original plants and the last two is the other.

Cherry seeds went into the fridge for stratification

Kiwi, brown leaves are the result of a foliar feeding session. The green leaves are new growth so it should look good again in no time. Just needs a bit more trellis.
(front left is Erysimum scoparium and around the stem Boerhavia diffusa)
Ice plant started blooming. This is after i rinsed off the insecticidal soap (it had some aphids sucking on the papillae) and before it turned into a living wreck.

Some seedlings, Canarina canariensis, Passiflora caerulea and Banisteriopsis caapi with some infection showing up in the leaves

Pups. 2 months later the second one broke trough

Dragon fruit (my first ever own roots pup with the apical meristem intact ) and Echinofossulocactus crispatus

Lophophora sp.

Ipomoea alba a week after i pollinated a flower. It's growing decently considering all round-up it has to endure from the neighbour, no signs of seed setting yet though.

Calycanthus floridus, Osmanthus x burkwoodii, tolguacha, sinicuichi, Jasminum officinale 'Aureum', wormwood and Lonicera tatarica. Jasminum not doing too well, might just have to get a real one that is green

Got carried away when trimming an aphid infested twig off the wormwood, completely forget i was anticipating flowers on it

Argyreia nervosa outside and another one (moved back) indoor

2 Khat cuttings, the mother plant and it's outdoor sibling

Nice garden!
Is that a kiwifruit vine? We call them kiwifruit in New Zealand and I'm just making sure. And has it got male and female grafted onto the one vine?

Ok. It's a different species than the traditional Kiwifruit found in supermarkets. Which makes sense as your plant has smaller leaves and seems less hairy.
In orchards they usually graft male vines onto female ones as they're dioecious. Seems like you could do the same with this species, although it's mainly grown fro the foliage it seems.

I love woodrose. Its such a beautiful plant, and the leaves get huge! Yours look beautiful. The leaf in my signature was a brand new leaf from mine, it was the only one I got to sprout and it's a beast now.
