Check it out These were planted very late, third week of June or so They recently started flowering but I've been cutting them, might leave two plants to make seed The rustica are just getting chewed up, snails slugs i presume. They don't care about the tobacum for some reason

How do you dry and cure your tobacco? Looks nice.

No idea dude! First time growing it. I've got a shed so I'm just going to hang the leaves up for a couple months and hope for the best? I'll probably bring them inside for the winter but I don't have anywhere warm enough really to do it properly but we'll see what happens, I may even build something elaborate. Thanks though I like them a lot, I don't actually even smoke cigaretts, have lots of friends that do however. and I really want to try Rustica

Make sure the leaves aren't bunched together when drying. I like to chop directly at the ground and hang the whole plant in a shaded shed with good air flow, as in an open door. Let hang till leaves lose all green color. Bring in before frost and continue to cure till ready.
It's a rude cure, but it worked fine for me. Treat it like curing mj, never bag it wet, smoke once the chlorophyll has cured away
Nice plants, I didn't think my stretched seedlings would do well so I only planted about a dozen. Those are about 3 feet tall now! I should have planted them all, but fuck it I've been so busy it's mental

I wish I had kept fewer Rustica and more of the Yellow Twist Bud everything I've read about that strain says it's an amazing plant that can be smoked right off the plant in some cases I'm using an extremely rich mix, so I think that it will be a bit more rough than most still have lots of seeds though, know what I'm doing next year!
Thanks Fuzz, I'll remember to keep the shed door open.
I'm noticing some of the bottom most leaves of the tobacum are starting to yellow, do you wait until the whole plant is yellow?

Do you have to kill the plant during harvest or will it grow year after year?

Very cool, I hope to grow my own next year and make snus with it. I have some rustica seeds that are probably 4 years old or so, maybe even more. I wonder if they are still viable. Keep us updated.

You sure those are snails/slugs? Have you checked the plants well? No sign of tobacco hornworms or Japanese beetles?
When I have grown Nicotiana tabacum in the past the only pest I had an issue with, were tobacco hornworms. I don't know if Japanese beetles will grub on tobacco, but those leaves sure look like what Jap beetles did to a begonia of mine a few days ago.

I never see on bugs on them in the daytime. I haven't worried too much about it because I really only want a couple good leaves of the rustica, but maybe tonight I'll go out with a flashlight

The tobacco plant, Nicotiana tabacum, is an annual. Like stinging nettles and cannabis it grows from seed in the spring, and sets seed when it dies in the winter. You harvest the plant while it is mature and alive, but it will naturally die soon anyway.

If you let it grow all the way, you'll get lots of very beautiful purple or pink flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies, and get a lifetime supply of tobacco seeds acclimated to your area. To grow for smoke, you feed with a fertilizer high in N and K but low in P. Cheap lawn fertilizer is best, when it starts throwing flowers, break or cut them off so the leaves get big. Harvest in one go and slowly dry the plant upside down.
I meant to grow some baccy this year, but was so buisy that i missed the window to get it started. My sunflowers, squashes, and tomatoes have gone nuts this year. I think the pumpkins are set on world domination.
