Bulk Pasturization of Coir/Verm Sub
    #23449172 - 07/17/16 08:52 AM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Hey Guys,

I've been growing alot of edibles lately and its been a while since I did any active grows. However, I have some P. Tampensis, P. Cyan, and P. Cubensis Mexico spawn on hand so I would like to run 3 tubs....

Usually I pasteurize by putting mason jars in a water bath with tinfoil lids....I think this is pretty standard procedure....but I simply have too much sub for this to be effective. I can only do 7 quarts at a time this way. Plus, I live with a beautiful girl now so I can't have cow manure sitting around my kitchen for days...

So far I've tried pot in pot pasturization. It took forever because my stock pot doesn't fit great inside my pressure cooker. I have to leave the lid off and it takes forever to get to pasturization temps.

Next, I tried filling a garbage bag with a tubs worth of substrate and placing it inside a water bath in a stockpot. At first this seemed to be working but then i noticed the sides of the sub would be at 180+ and the core would be much cooler. 100-130 in some places. So I don't think this is gunna work....unless I'm just getting bad readings from my thermometer? LOL.

The next best thing I can think of is to buy some foil roasting pans and try oven pasturization. But this seems like a pain in the ass. No easy way to check the temps, and I can see moisture loss being an issue. I don't want to spend money on roasting pans unless I know itl work.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Using the old mason jar method seems like the best option, but it would take soooo long.

has anyone tried this? Seems to me like all the evaportation would dick moisture content, but maybe not?

I personally mix all my sub in a large cake pan, foil TIGHT and bake at 170 for 2 and a half hours.

I put my coir and vermiculite and gypsum in a 5gallon bucket and pour boiling water over it, close it and let it set...a la bucket tek

:whathesaid:Noting easier than the bucket, you can even PC sterilize coir if you wanted.
