Blue-green mold + cobweb?
    #23446893 - 07/16/16 01:40 PM (7 years, 7 months ago)

So, I've got two cakes in the fruiting chamber now-- The first one has some grey-blackish weblike stuff with little black dots around the bottom of it:

I'm still not sure exactly what cobweb mold looks like. Is that what this is? ^

The second cake hasn't fruited yet but has some blue-green mold growing on the bottom. I'm pretty sure it's mold and not brusing because it was spreading onto the perlite:

Most importantly, (and I'm sure you're all sick of this question, but I still gotta ask) do you think these are still safe to eat? Should I dry them right away or let them keep going? I washed out the tupperware and chopped the mold off the bottom of the unfruited cake. Should I just throw that one away?

This is my first attempt at this, so any advice is appreciated, and thanks for being patient with me.

The first contam is actually a pin mold. Very similar to cobweb except it has black pin heads (thus the name pin mold). Common pin molds are mucor and Rhizopus. The other contam ID is definitely a green mold like trich or aspergillus.

Uh I'd like to highly recommend tossing that green cake, and cleaning the effected area of perlite. You can sterilize perlite in the oven.

Thanks for the help! Bummer to toss out that cake, but I guess it's what I expected I'd have to do.

Do you think the cake that had black pin mold could be edible still or is that worth throwing out too?

I would just get rid of it. No sense keeping moldy shit around your house. Try to not disturb the black heads of the pin mold too much, they are spores. Be sure to never mist any molds with chemicals or water and never try to cut them out.
