All American Electric Sterilizer 50X Pastuerization Questions
    #23447232 - 07/16/16 04:07 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

ive been trying to find pictures and videos to figure this out myself but havent yet

My questions is can it be used as a pasteurizer by lowing its temperature , ive been trying to get pictures on the knob to tell but they are all small so far

Also if i can use one of these is there anything i can just buy that will , I know you can make them or jerry rig things , franks tek on it seems to be very popular but im looking for something I can set and forget if possible

Side question , for lighting , i dont need a 12 on 12 off do it , ive just been turning it on and off as i go to sleep and wake up , have i been screwing this up , I thought they just need it for direction essentially, just wanted to double check

If you mean to ask if you can pasteurize in a pressure cooker with the lid
on, the answer is no. Anything over atmospheric pressure would make the
water too hot for pasteurizing.

Pasteurizing temps are between 140 and 170. Anything over is sterilizing.
You can use the pc with the lid off to heat water to pasteurize

I don't have an electric sterilizer. But, you could probably do it using a modified version of my casing tek in my sig. The tek is for pastuerizing casing in a 941. You would just follow the pasteurizing part. With a 50x the only difference is you would be shutting off the heating element of the 50x at the point where the gas is turned off in my tek. You just need to devise a rack that will hold the bags or jars above the element and mostly submerged in the water.

Yes you can, I used to do it in my All American 25x. Turn down the thermostat and keep the control valve open at all times to keep it from building pressure.

Hmmmm wouldn't that still be really hot? I mean water capable of producing
steam is too hot to pasteurize correctly right? Coir being to only exception.

I mean when I use poo, I keep my water at 160 the entire time.

I keep the lid propped up on the retention clips so there's a gap all around the lid.

No. Core temp is whats important.
Core temp is bottom left reading:

Have you seen franks pasteurizing tek?

See propping the lid is what I'm talkin about. Any actual seal will create pressure, right?

And ya I've seen it, but what I mean is that if your bath water is at
190 let's say, then the poo closest to the outside of the bag will be
pretty much 190 even if the core is only 140 at that point. Wouldn't the
poo nearest the outside of the bag be partially sterilized at that point?

For fear of this, I've always just left my bath water at 160 or so
and let it sit till the core reaches 140 and turn my stove off and wait
an hour.

liloldme said he keeps the control valve open, not sealed.

Yes the exterior sub will be partially sterilized. But this does not matter. Because we have kept the core at the correct temps there is the beneficial bacteria still in the core. On cool down this bacteria will recolonize the rest of the substrate.

Any pasteurization method will partially sterilize the outside, it's the core that matters.

I think OPs uncertainty stems from having to close the lid in order to get the PC to start warming up. Like how you need to close a microwave door in order to get it to work. With the weight removed, the temp won't go above the boiling point of water to any detrimental degree, you will be switching off the heat just as the water starts to boil anyway.

When I used to pasteurize in my presto, I would get the water to a boil, turn the flame off and seal the PC without the weight so the steam can escape. Gets to ~160-165F before it starts to lose temp. Pretty set and forget for a pasteurizing method.

I've been using a similiar method in my drum barrel pasteurizer, I get the core to ~110F and turn off the flame.
