where and how does this cacti produce seed?
is there a good viable rate?
how long does this proccess take?
Do you have to harm the cacti to get them?

The cacti produce seed "pods" after they flower, provided they are polinated. As far as viability goes, that depends on the particular plant and how the seeds were cared for after they were harvested.

To grow a peyote from seed to full grown cactus you're looking at about probably 15-25 years. By that time there will be no way in hell you'll wanna eat it

Just something I thought I'd note... Growng peyote from seed is tough in my experience. I tried growing L. diffusa and 3 of the 10 seeds germinated then they ended up dying... maybe my thumb just isn't as green as I thought.

does anyone know for sure whether peyote pollinate itself? none of mine have flowered at the same time, but they all produce seed pods. i assume they are pollinating themselves.

gumby, sounds like you're doing something wrong if you are only getting a 30% germination ratio. 11 out of 15 of my most recently sown seeds made it. i didn't sterilize the soil, so cobweb mold got the other four.

how are you germinating your seeds?

It does.
Seeds are viable but would have higher germination level when pollinated by other Lophophora that didn't originate from the same clone.

The "pods" are fruit. Take the seeds and eat the rest. Wont fuck you up, but it tastes great.

why not collect pollen from one in sandwhich bags and then use it to brush onto the pistils of the others when it flowers (don't for get to emasculate the one you want to pollinate)?

my only thing now is finding a suitable grafting stock for it.

I've heard / seen remarkable results with una's posts using pereskiopsis

however I can't find the little bugger anywhere. anyone know where one can locate a decent cutting?

or perhaps other fast growing graft stock ideas.

prickly pair,
san pedro,
p. torch.

when grafting stock do you have to carefull when maching up these cacti to certain other cacti in order for the grafts to work?

click here for sources. both mesa garden and smoley's have pereskiopsis.

click here and here for grafting information.

thanks neuro. i have thought about that before, but assumed that the pollen wouldn't remain viable for long.
