So apparently the Turkish is constitutionally obligated to intervene if Islam is trying to take control of the government or if the Prime Minister doesn't respect the democracy of the country (dictates).
Either one of those two things happened or this is just an inside job by ambitious military officials.

Turkey has had a LOT of coups and failed coups. There was a failed one just a couple years ago. For Turkey, this is business as usual. Every couple years/decades, they have a coup. Some are successful, some are not, it'll be interesting to see how this one goes.
I personally think it would be a good thing if they got rid of Ergodan, but he was democratically elected and he'd (probably) hit a term limit eventually. They could have waited him out instead of doing a coup. The problem with coups is that you never know what you end up with. A military junta for sure, but in the long run nothing is guaranteed. Might stay military run forever, might go completely dictatorship, or might become a secular democracy. Zero certainty, everything is up in the air.
At least with waiting out Ergodan less people die and there's more certainty.
But, I would be happy if they forced Ergodan out. The man is a dictator who suppresses free speech, freedom of the press, and dissent in general plain and simple. I just worry about what will happen after he's gone. It would be very easy for someone even worse to replace him.

We're getting images of some injuries among pro-coup protesters on the Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul.
Many of them are too graphic to display. Live images broadcast at about 01:10 local time (23:00 GMT) appeared to show a number of people being shot on the bridge.

I'm sure a lot of it is warning fire, with some of it being shootings.

Turkey is NATO.
NATO Article 5 states an attack on any NATO nation is an attack on ALL NATO nations. If Turkey were attacked by, say, Syria, NATO would be bound to intervene on Turkey's behalf.
But seeing as how this is an internal regime change (in a nation where coups happen every decade) by an army that the US traditionally supports, I expect theyll let it happen without intervention.

Why did they schedule the coup when the leader was on vacation?

I hadn't heard that he was on vacation, but that's actually smart because it disrupts the chain of command and you can prevent him from reentering the country much easier than you could find him if he hid in the country.
Controlling the border and airports is much easier than a house to house search.

I can actually think of two leaders just off the top of my head who were found in holes: Saddam and Gaddafi. Well Gaddafi was found in a sewer drain pipe (which I think is a perfect ending for him), but that's a kind of hole.
I wonder how common it is for dictators to be found in holes

It's easier to take power without the head of the military there to actively guide counter-efforts.
